....I have been posting on this board since 1998, when I first arrived nothing could keep my optimism from waivering-the Aztecs were the best football team ever, they were national champs lying in wait, they were destined to be the kings of SoCal football. Oh then the slow, cruel and agonizing death of a child began its agonizing journey on my soul. Please Hoke and company reverse the slow killing of the child that did not want to listen to the old farts that kept saying "same old Aztecs" as we blew fourth quarter leads. As we hired JC coaches and unproven bullshitters to lead the way the child kept being bombarded with defeat and humiliation and his death seems imminent. Wait! he is still there, somewhere like a small flame on a bbq grill when you only have one match left and no more lighter fluid. Make me a believer again. Make me feel like a kid waiting for Christmas again when Aztec football starts. Make the cynic in me go away.

I've been on the various boards since Vegas as well and you are absolutely right about the agony of watching all this. And reading the annual Kool Aid BS on the various boards hasn't helped. The "rosy outlook, all is good" chat-ups while the program was tanking. 'Twas tough, indeed, to take. I'm with you! Come on, Hoke! Give our misery meaning. Make it worthwhile dragging our spouses to awful football for twelve years. Bring back my Aztecs! The Fred Noonan School of Navigation.

To add to Fred's always welcome comments, I've also been here on and off since several months after the LV Bowl in 1998. (Not sure if anybody but Forsythe, JYP and AztecJoe have been around longer.) And during that time, this board has too often been comprised of glass completely full or glass completely empty posts even though Aztecs sports are never that black and white. Aztecs football in 2010? I agree with you that although there's reason for optimism, history shows it needs to be very guarded optimism.

We've resorted to begging? Man is this one beatdown fanbase... Correct, we have indeed sunk to begging and we are for sure beat down. Oh, the horror of it all. It's time for the knight in shining armor to ride in on that great white steed and run his/her lance through the demons that beset us. Oh, and step on BYU on the way back to the barn. Please, Oh Please, drop that 8-4 season in my tin cup. Or, for that matter throw a 6-6 at me, you don't even have to hit the cup. The Fred Noonan School of Navigation.

I'm realistic that this program has a lot of softies and that there will be some moments when they throw up their hands when things don't go their way; but, I also think there will be, again, some major improvements and maybe enough to start turning the corner and go to and win a bowl game.

It has been a rough road, since 98. I too have had the broken heart syndrome for many a year. This coach and team feel different and I am going out on a limb, and saying we will have a above .500 season with one big upset. Don't let the branch break Hoke.

I registered with the incarnation active in '95. And I've been active on every incarnation since. I just think it is the single best source of all sources if you know what I mean. I began my Aztec journey with the '86 WAC champions and eventual Holiday Bowl losers (damn missed field goal). Marshall and Lugie gave us hope in the early 90's. Then Tollner pulled a bait ('98) and then switch ('99 and after). Then most of you all know the rest. Yes I have died a thousand deaths due to Aztec football. Yet I'm still hopeful. In Hoke we must trust (have we a choice?)! This board has been around since 98? Aztec Talk, in one form or another, has been operating since around '95 or '96, I think. =Bob

[quote author=johnyourpal board=ats thread=1989 post=21508 "Fans" who keep smiling and nodding in the face of this garbage are the problem.[/quote]
At least they're more helpful than those fans who folded up their tents and went home a long time ago.
I can't think of anyone here who would call the last 10+ years anything but abject failure when it comes to football. Oh sure, the blind squirrel found a nut once or twice - but overall it's generally sucked.
I'd rather have someone smiling and being hopeful still around than having someone leave who doesn't even give a crap anymore.
There are sadists and there are hardcore sadists. Anyone on this board falls into the latter category. And the kinky ones do, indeed, smile through the suffering...
