They pick us to tie UNM for seventh place in the MWC with a record of 2-2 OOC and 2-6 in conference. Contrary to Phil Steele, TSN always hates us. Or more specifically, Matt Hayes always hates us for some reason.
Andre will be interested to note that Hayes has Troy Calhoun winning Coach of the Year for guiding AFA to a 9-3 season despite their entirely new O-line. (Actually, two of the five have combined for like nine starts the last two years.)
Josh Jones will be interested to note that Hayes isn't quite as impressed with Bobby Hauck as he is, predicting an abysmal 1-12 record. (The Rebs play at Hawaii so get an extra game this year.) That would be UNLV's first 12-loss season ever.

Let's hope we make him eat his words.

They pick us to tie UNM for seventh place in the MWC with a record of 2-2 OOC and 2-6 in conference. Well I'm saying 2-2 and 3-5. I hope this guy and I are both wrong. At the end of the season, someone is going to be right on. Regarding the 2-2 non-conf record, there's a lot of optimism here on the Wasatch Front regarding Utah State. If this team is as good as a lot of people up here hope they are, then 2-2 is quite possible, (the Tigers an assumed loss). And if the Aztecs pick up where they left off last year, then I guess a 2-6 conf record is, again, possible. But, for me, totally unacceptable. I'm planning on putting some serious miles following this team the first two weeks of the season. I'm assuming this team will be 2-0 and though I don't expect a top twenty, ( ), I hope their performance in both games is an indication of good things to come for the season. As always, we'll see.

No where to go but up.
We're still work in progress.
It's not like we arrived or anything.

I think we're going to lose to Utah State OOC (though the fact we should finally have a good kicker this year might allow us to win a close one). And because casual fans don't know that USU has a very good young head coach and a very good QB and will therefore expect us to blow the Aggies out, that loss won't just keep us from being bowl eligible, it will cost us several thousand per game in home attendance thereafter. (My apologies ahead of time to the Beach Boys fans out there - inside joke.)

Then we'd be in real trouble because the cheap loss I'm calling for is NMSU. $#!+ I don't even wanna think about 1-3 OOC...so I won't. We will have a game under our belts whereas NMSU won't. And NMSU averaged <12 ppg last year and will be probably be using a QB with zero college experience. Therefore, unless Lindley has an AFA-type game and gives them points via turnovers, NMSU won't be able to put the ball in the end zone. Ergo, I predict we will win that one in scintillating fashion 14-6. (Yawn.)

The had a horrendous season but had a quality win over Idaho. But even in that win, they allowed 34 points a game. We will yield points, but we will win in a WAC like score.

Additionally-does USU really have the means to stop Demarco and Vincent Brown? Our OL was good in pass blocking last year-I think we can beat a team like USU with our passing game.

However, the greatest neutralizer of the 3-3-5 is a mobile QB and USU's Borel is exactly that. I'll add this. If either team is without it's starting QB whereas the other's QB is healthy, the game won't be close since both of us have a top-notch guy as the starter and then what I would diplomatically say is a huge falloff thereafter.

It's a lot easier to look good as a QB when you have a legit running game behind you, especially running the spread option like they do. If Turbin doesn't play against us we are going to crush Utah State at home. Yes they beat Idaho last year but they also lost to NMSU. If Turbin plays this game is a tossup, if he doesn't, they are dead in the water. I just don't see how their defense can stop us. Their defense last year was nearly as bad as ours was two years ago and it doesn't look to be any better this year.

I'm with you there K5-I just don't see how their defense can stop us, even if we played a one dimensional offense (passing game). We have some legit receivers and an OL that can pass block. As I stated before I am cautiously optimistic, I use cautiously only because of the slow death of the child in me. lol

Re Turbin, if you're correct, USU is going to be dead in the water since speculation on their board was that he wouldn't return until the WAC season and speculation now is that he will take a medical redshirt. However, they have another quality tailback behind him. Not as good as Turbin for sure, but probably as good as anybody we have. Finally, I think some of you are ignoring the possibility - make that probability - that their defense will be a lot better this year. Their head coach, Gary Andersen, was formerly Utah's defensive coordinator. Yeah, their D was awful a year ago, but as exemplified by Brady Hoke at SDSU, Rome wasn't built in a year.

True, but look at the tremendous jump in performance our defense had going from Long to Hoke. Was there a similar drop going from Brent Guy to Gary Anderson? I'll look it up and get back to you. On their board there's a lot of talk about how their Dline is woefully weak and that their linebacking core is solid. That doesn't sound like a good combination for a team that runs a 4-3.

Wow! I knew their defense was bad last year but it looks even worse when you have the numbers in front of you. In '08 under Guy, this is how their defensive numbers looked... PPG 34.7 Rushing Y/A 4.47 Yards 1923 Passer Rtg 137.70 Yards 3013 Offense Y/P 5.8 Sacks 18 Ints 12 In '09 under Anderson, this is how their defensive numbers looked... PPG 34 Rushing Y/A 5.29 Yards 2466 Passer Rtg 136.22 Yards 2995 Offense Y/P 6.4 Sacks 17 Ints 12 Not much improvement at all and it actually got worse in a few areas. Now that could be attributed to players graduating, leaving the team, etc...but we had the same types of issues here and our numbers changed dramatically under Hoke (Rocky Long) In '08 under Long... PPG 37.2 Rushing Y/A 5.09 Yards 2970 Passer Rtg 151.53 Yards 2559 Offense Y/P 6.2 Sacks 13 Ints 9 In '09 under Hoke... PPG 30.5 Rushing Y/A 3.95 Yards 1986 Passer Rtg 129.23 Yards 2598 Offense Y/P 5.4 Sacks 19 Ints 11

When you lump both NMSU and USU together ask yourself this. They may have decent coaches but really, can they actually recruit a multitude of studs at those places? I can't believe they would have 22 stud starters, not to say we have as many. That's the problem the WAC has. Overall, the MWC doesn't lose recruits to that conference just as the Pac-10(12) doesn't lose that many recruits to the MWC.
Sure we can still lose, hell even Hoke did against Idaho. In the past the SDSU players seemed to believe in the papers too much and just showed up overconfident. We're all too familiar with losing games we should have won.
I doubt Hoke will allow that to happen this time around. His preaching about finishing games means he's going to pour it on whenever he gets the chance. No prevent defense.

Wow. Looks like the Aztecs will be one of only 3 losses suffered by the Falcons this season. Not. AFA could have as many as 6. As for SDSU, they almost got it right. AndreAztec has it 2-2 OOC, 3-5 MWC. 5-7 and ANOTHER step- in the right direction. Andre will be interested to note that Hayes has Troy Calhoun winning Coach of the Year for guiding AFA to a 9-3 season despite their entirely new O-line. (Actually, two of the five have combined for like nine starts the last two years.)
