Did the drinking issue come up before that slide? IIRC, it first arose as early as just after the loss at Idaho during Tom's first year, which would be just four games into his tenure as head coach. IIalsoRC, it was reported in the U-T via a quote from a named booster who made the trip and another who didn't want his or name used. (God how 2002-2008 were terrible days in the history of SDSU football.)

I really thought that we might be turning the corner when the team finished 6-6 in 2003. However, even if that "phantom fumble" had not cost us the CSU game, we could still would have finished below .500 the next year (would have been 5-6). Then came the disappointments of 2005, a year in which we beat a couple of good teams in conference but lost to some losers.
In short, Tom Craft has a decent start at SDSU, but could not improve the roster enough by years three and four to get the job done. Believe me, unless Tom had driven an 18-wheeler through the front door of a day care center while dead drunk, he would not have been fired if the team had won 9 or 10 games in 2004 and 2005.
Chuck Long, on the other hand, did NOT have a good start and quickly went down hill from there.
(By the way, that TD on the INT in the Buckeye end zone cost Tom Craft and the Aztecs a huge signature win. Also, it would have given SDSU a winning season (7-5) in 2003 and likely a bowl appearance as well. For that matter, how about Tom's first year. A botched FG attempt cost us a win against Fresno. Even with that loss one can see that SDSU opened 0-5 and then won four of the last eight. Most fair observers would say that such improvement over the course of the season shows that the coaching staff was doing a good job. Too bad that could not continue past 2003.)

That '03 team was probably the most talented Aztec team we've had in 15-20 years. Look how many players from it are now in the NFL.
If Adam Hall doesn't get that high ankle sprain in the first game against Eastern Washington we go bowling that year.
