I may be wrong, but it seems like the team is getting more and better coverage than at teh beginning of camp last year.

Another sign that this team continues to need a bit of an ass kicking due to being somewhat soft.

The U-T has had pretty exceptional coverage this week on the Aztecs. From this report to the article on Lindley, the column from Canepa and the interview with Coach Hoke. Considering attendance and TV ratings of the Chargers vs. the Aztecs, the U-T coverage has been proportionately better. Hopefully this puts to rest the annoying conspiracy theorists for at least a few weeks.

Seriously, I am happy with some good coverage during camp hopefully leading up into the season instead of stories on the rest of the conference and team stories before camp and then sparse coverage.

Hoke needs to get harder on them about finishing. I wasn't that impressed with the energy and entusiasm of that first practice. It seemed rather subdued to me. I wanted to jump off the sidelines and put a shoulder to someone I was so jacked - the players seemed less so. It seemed more like the second practice of two-a-days in week three than the first practice in just helmets and shorts. If I were Hoke those guys would have been running sprints to get their spirits up.

I think we just still have a lot of soft, fragile players; there gets to the point of if you push softies too much they might just fall apart before it even starts. It is not encouraging that guys come out Cadillacing it the first fall practice in shorts and shirts after the late season collapse and not a one of them having success at this level. The more redshirts and true freshman that see the field and start to take over positions the better this program is going to be. I'm anxious to see hear what the first day of pads is like, because that is christmas, 4th of july and your birthday rolled into one.

I was kind of pissed that NCAA rules prohibit pads for the first 3 days. I wanted to see action and who was using the gains from the weightroom to translate to the field. In their defense I think every one of those players has it in them to be great. They just need to self-motivate or get motivated by the coaching staff. They all have the ability - it just needs to come out. We can all help by cheering them on at games and practices. I think practices would be much more spirited if a decent-sized contingent of supporters showed up and cheered the team on.

Interesting. After losing the last four games of the season, going through Spring Camp and listening to the coaches preach about "finishing" since last November they still come out in their first practice and give it up at the end. Thus, requiring more instruction on "finishing." My immediate reaction to that was like others here, we still have carry over attitudes from prior years. My guess is that they are the older players who learned how to be soft and simply carry the accumulated baggage of the last ten years. I am hoping that Hoke is keeping this from spreading to his recruits and is making headway in erradicating the loser mentality in the older players. The big challenge for the coaches this season is changing the mindset/loser mentality on the Mesa. It can be seen in our woeful road record and in the Wyoming/UNLV collapses of last year. We have a ton of old baggage and it needs to be jettisoned. The Fred Noonan School of Navigation.

It's like today's working world where they try to polarize the younger workers from the older workers to "encourage" the older workers to retire.
The same may have to hold with these upperclassmen with the poor attitudes. Unfortunately they're a necessary evil due to depth issues. As much as football is the ultimate team sport, they need to find a way to separate them so they won't poison the underclassmens' minds. Graduation can't come soon enough for some of those guys.
