Gelaun Wheelwright Terrific frame, very good athleticism, solid release, great lift, yet rated low because "the rest of his game has not improved". I read that as huge upside potential. It is good to stay on him in case it does improve. I don't know if we really need to take a chance. That may depend on his defense. You can afford to have a questionable offensive player on the bench if he can come in and play very good defense. JYP Question: USC

kid has a nice pull-up jumper. the scouting reports indicate he needs to tighten up his ball handling and be more consistent. highlight videos are very misleading, of course, but his jumper looks smooth here:

Haven't we reached the position where we are no longer into maybes, could happen, needs to improve lots more.........and reached the plateau of solid player...will continue to get better, a sure thing but needs to work on whatever, brings lots of skill and talent, etc.? Think we now can be more selective and targeted.

Think we now can be more selective and targeted. Every player is a maybe, until they prove otherwise .. that's the way it is. This kid clearly has talent and is very smooth and quick with the ball. He may never be a true PG but that may not be necessary either considering we now have 2 PGS with height (6'2 and 6'3). And when he arrives Tapley and Rahon will already be juniors and we need to looking to the future. Leonard is probably the best judge of this kids talent because King split two games with Centennial Kawhi's senior year and Wheelwright dropped 26 on King in the win and was held to 18 in the loss. Centennial will be one of the top teams in the state this year and this kid is their best player.

I would like us to pass on him based on our team's needs. We dont have any immediate need at either of our guard positions until the 2012 class... unless we land a top 50 recruit, such as Norman Powell, our priorities are PF, C, and SF.
Im sure the staff would have really jumped at this kid had we not already landed Xavier Thames.

According to the LA Times SDSU isn't even in the mix anyway... "USC pulled its scholarship offer after deciding Wheelwright had not made the improvement needed in several areas, according to Giles."
"They both decided they wanted to go in a different direction," Giles said.
"Wheelwright, who committed to the Trojans at the end of his sophomore season, will be a senior this fall. He has interest from UC Riverside, Cal State Northridge and UC Santa Barbara."[/b] latimesblogs.latimes.com/varsitytimesinsider/2010/08/boys-basketball-wheelwright-no-longer-headed-to-usc.html

I dunno, he looks like a turnover about to happen with the way he handles the ball coming up court.

you might be right ... he had more turnovers (83) than assists (80) last year.

Think we now can be more selective and targeted. We have "reached the position" where we don't take a chance on a player whose up side is average. We have "reached the position" where we take a chance on a player who could be great. His basics (size / athleticism) give him a very high upside. But this is where "In Fish we trust" comes into play.

My 2 cents... if it matters... I agree we should pass.
I am excited by the fact that we are in a position to be selective. I thought Fisher had plateued before last year, fortunately I WAS WRONG!

The thing I don't understand is this guy seems like the second coming of Eric Lawton, who had so many people jacked up on this site a year ago. Have we all gotten smarter? And I agree that this player doesn't seem to fill our biggest needs of forwards and bigs .. but I thought for sure a bunch of people would be in love with this guy?
And this is relates back to the 3rd post on here about "aren't we past the point of maybes, and taking chances on upside players?"
A year ago I would bet 70-80% of us would have gladly taken Lawton over Tapley based on expert opinions and ratings, and Lawton is now struggling at a JC and Tapley became a reliable starter for us. Work ethic and desire are usually the hardest things to measure or predict.

I, too, will vote to pass on any player who does not appear to be pretty solid in all aspects of the game. If we can recruit a Kawhi Leonard why should we not expect to recruit only the cream of the crop? Maybe not the absolute creme de la creme (i.e, McDonald's All Americans), but close to it.
On another topic, the cutthroat nature of big-time college sports is demonstrated by USC's reneging on its scholarship offer to this kid. Brutal business.

did you also read today in the LA Times that USC has 3 other major transfers coming so the latest will only have 1 year remaining and will not get a scholarship this year, must be nice to be able to "pay" for their tuition. We need to continue to set the bar up there high where it belongs but realize many recruirts still "think" UCLA, USC, U of A are better then we are. Hope this year shows them how wrong they are

Work ethic and desire are usually the hardest things to measure or predict. Part of it had to do with the fact that a year ago at this time, we were very thin at guard and our last game of the previous season against Baylor had exposed our vulnerability to good guard play. Richie was our small, tough, pesky guard and we wanted to replace that (at least I did) and Lawton seemed to fit the mold. I still believe there are good reasons to have at least one quick little waterbug on the roster - if not for full-time play, then at least as an insurance policy for matchup situations. I remember Tyronne Lue made a living at this by for the Lakers by his constant pestering of fellow shortie Allen Iverson (yes, I know Iverson is about 6'0, but it's all relative)

According to ESPN, 2011 players considering SDSU:
Norman Powell Shooting Guard 6-2 175 Abraham Lincoln H.S. (CA) SG #13 96 Undeclared ESPNU 100
T.J. Taylor Point Guard 5-9 155 Oakland H.S. (CA) PG #26 92 Undeclared Player has Decommitments
Collin Woods Point Guard 6-2 165 Horizon H.S. (AZ) PG #40 90 Undeclared Ronnie Stevens Power Forward 6-8 215 Junipero Serra H.S. (CA) PF #50 89 Undeclared
Gelaun Wheelwright Shooting Guard 6-1 170 Centennial H.S. (CA) SG #57 89 Undeclared Player has Decommitments
Damiene Cain Power Forward 6-6 215 Harvard-Westlake School (CA) PF #77 87 Undeclared Juan Anderson Small Forward 6-5 190 Castro Valley H.S. (CA) SF #77 86 Undeclared
Seems that we are in the mix on some high quality players. Heavy on swing men and point guards.
I trust Fisher and crew to fill the needs and make it all fit.

Some of this info is out of date (I think) and also doesn't completely match the 'players considering' that are listed by scout and rivals.
We offered wheelwright last year long before either of the Franklins committed, and I believe we offered the 2 PG's prior to us getting Thames, so I would think all of the PG/SG/combos listed might be be out of the picture now. Although it sounds like SG Powell is still the only player shorter than 6'5 we are still after.
Another PG that has been mentioned as a lock to come here for months now is CJ Cooper, who has played tremendously well this last year, is probably out of the picture too.
