Sorry if this thread is redundant, but I thought it worth mentioning how the UT said Ruffin had been moved to RB. What do you make of that? Is that a sign of the depth at WR or the lack of trust the staff has in the RBs?

I believe the coaches did this because JC running back Deonte Williams did not report/make it in. Hoke has spoken recently about the running backs and has mentioned everyone but Williams, which is leads me to believe he is not on campus. Per the updated roster, Williams is not listed and Ruffin is wearing number 34 now. The new WR wearing number 41, should be Fresno JC WR Marcus Russell. I will be out for tomorrows practice and will try and confirm.

Have you seen Ruffin's high school clips? I think he has moved to running back because he will tear it up.

I think the coaches believe Ruffin can make more of an impact at RB and as a returner, than a WR (this year). This likely has something to do with depth at the position. as well as other factors. RB is a more instinctive position, whereas WR takes more time to learn with routes, hot reads, etc.

As a RB he's somewhat skinny at 190 lbs. IMO at 6'1" he should be a minimum of 200lbs. He seems close to Chris Johnson speed who's also about 190 lbs, but he's listed at 5'11." If Ruffin remains a RB then he'll be ready for the pounding next year instead. Not so much this year. I think he needs a year with Wellman.
I have a feeling Hoke plans to use a RB by committee system this year. For now I think Kazee, Hillman and Ruffin won't be feature backs due of size and experience. Collectively they should be productive, however.

I think the coaches are trying to get the best players on the field even if they're a bit out of position.

Hasn't there been a lot of rumbling he would be the wildcat back if/when we trot it out there, I'd imagine they'll use him as a back, a slot, a wild cat, punt returner, etc

Found this comment of Ruffin on YouTube:
"He reminds me of Marcus Allen out of Lincoln High in San Diego in 1978. A Jack Of All Trades on the football field...his football speed and angles and instincts make him more likely to suceed all the way to the nfl...I watch and study high school players. I believe this young man will be playing on Sundays after an All American college career. He is very explosive and put him in a weight room with serious strength coaches and you will be looking at the next Marcus Allen."
I agree with this comment.

as Monty and others have pointed out, get the best athletes on the field , Ezell could play a variety of positions with his speed want to involve him on plays where we get him the ball in the open field

Oldie Out Wow - that is one hell of a statement regarding Ruffin. I hope its even close to being accurate. What's the story on the Fresno transfer?

according to seagull's practice report "Deonte Williams was listed as #34, and there was a fine running back wearing #34 who got a lot of reps and looked good. #34 also caught some passes in drills."
As far as everything I have heard Deonte Williams is there.

Collectively they should be productive, however. And Luginbill planned to have TC Wright as his RB in 1991, backed up by.... Ron Slack? Then Marshall at about 5'10 180 was 3rd string. I'm not sure there will be a feature back, but if somebody stands out above the rest, regardless of his size, he will be the feature back. I'm guessing Hillman and Ruffin both play an awful lot, with the others not far behind. Garrett could change that, though.

Deonte williams was not listed on the hand out at todays practice. What happened to him? # 34 is Ruffin. Meuema # 39 was there.

TC Wright was pretty good back also. Marshall's breakout game against Pacific when he scored 7 TD's he only played 3 quarters.
