Bench strength for Thomas and White - are Shelton( knees ?), Carlwell and AW-#0( has talent see if he comes back improved and ready to give it his best) , needs minutes to see if he will be here for 2011, Frenchie was brought in for shooting the 3 from the wing- see if he can at the D1 level something he did not do his first year here, last year that was what we needed. Now we have Rahon from the 2 or 3 position, plus the addition of the 2 Franklins and Tapley with a year under his belt and DJ getting some time at SG if Franklin plays PG.

The redshirt discussion should not be taken seriously. No need to ask "insiders" about it. I just threw the question out there to get a conversation going. Nothing more. I already gave you the answer to your question. The question wasn't "WILL he redshirt?" the question was "SHOULD he redshirt". There is no single answer to my question because it is a question that requires an opinion. I'm sorry if this confuses you.

I am telling you that he won't redshirt this year, so your question is kinda pointless. I think he should redshirt this year myself but it isn't going to happen.

A redshirt year would make sense with the depth we should have but . . last year should have been his redshirt year, especially with Fisher refusing to play him in blowouts (due to weight issues, I believe) and adjusting to college life and play. But it's possible Williams could contribute more than Cheriet this year and take his minutes if he is physically in shape. His shooting, ball handling and passing might all be better than Cheriets and if he is a more aggressive rebounder and interior player he should be a rotation player next year. I hope he gets at least 8-10 mins per game next year and has lost enough weight (gained quickness) that he can play both SF and PF. Lots of talent if Shelton and White stay healthy (but I assume they will miss 5-7 games combined which will bump everyone's minutes up a few), projected minutes at SF/F/C... Thomas (30) White (27) Leonard (30) bench Shelton (12) Carlwell (9) A Williams (6) J Franklin (6) Cheriet (0) I find it extremely difficult to believe Medhi gets 0 minutes a game and that Franklin gets the same minutes as Williams I expect Franklin to get 15+ minutes, but half will come at SG and half at SF ... and I don't necessarily think Cheriet will get 0, because someone will miss a few with injury or a few blowouts will make everyone's mins will go up. But Williams has the bigger upside for the team so I'm hoping his play and Shelton's health will win minutes for those two over Carlwell and Cheriet. And the minutes I have projected for Williams assumes basketball playing time was a big motivation for him this summer, and he dropped 20-30 lbs and really worked on his game. Cheriet has already made it clear that basketball is not necessarily his priority, therefor I don't expect that his game has improved, but I'm hoping Williams' has. UNLV, NM and BYU have all added physical rebounding forwards and whoever of these four bench players is willing to battle inside will get the playing time.

I think that is a very unfair assessment to say he has made it clear that basketball isn't his number one priority and therefore won't have improved because he redshirted to finish his degree and when he got something like 12 minutes the year before, and also faulty logic to assume that a guy that showed up well overweight and couldn't get off the bench with some times of need in the front court suddenly improved. I don't think Franklin is going to get 9+ minutes at shooting guard either, he will get his minutes at SF he has dj, chase, rahon likely ahead of him for minutes at the 2. He will have to show he can handle the ball to get minutes in the backcourt.

I don't want to take away from any football news. It is so exciting to hear what is going on at Montezuma Mesa with Brady Hoke and staff....But.... I have been checking around as much as I can about one of the basketball players that everyone seems to have questions about. Alec Williams the soph forward who played very little last year. I am hearing very good things about Alec (if my contacts are correct, and they are closer than I am). I am hearing that the staff is very excited about his play, his progress, and that over the next two years he is going to become a solid player and a key player in the rotation. If so that would be great. From what I can tell he can hit the mid range jumper, has very nice low post moves, and is a beast underneath with his banging and size. I hope I am right and I hope my sources are right. We may see much more from Alec this season. Steve, if this is the case, then his improvement from one year to the next may be one of the greatest we will have witnessed in the Fisher era. They would be up there with Manker from junior to senior year and Sanders from soph to junior year (or was it junior to senior for Aerick as well?). Either way, I am excited about basketball season. Stoked to see improvement in football, but ready for a downright sick season of basketball.

There have been so many question and comments about Alec on the board over the last year. He is a unkown piece of the Aztec puzzle at this time. If fired me up and I can't wait for the season to get going.

He will have to show he can handle the ball to get minutes in the backcourt. Some of those comments were hopeful, more than anything (although I do think Franklin will challenge Tapley for the starting spot and play similar minutes to him this year). A bigger performance from Williams and Shelton is beneficial to the team this year, but also next year, and I also don't really expect Carlwell or Cheriet to have improved much based on their age and previous performances, ... although they might easily end up our 1st and 2nd bigs off the bench and have solid contributions next year. I think Williams has a very solid game ... I just don't know if he has the pride, the motivation and the will power to match. But his skills and upside could be good enough to overtake Cheriet in the rotation ... as long as his weight is closer to 235 and not 270. And I know Shelton has the game, the pride and the motivation ... but his knees will always be in question. If healthy, he is better than both Carlwell and Cheriet .. but that remains a big IF. And regardless of who ends up getting the playing time, I hope all four players are worried about minutes and working hard to improve, which will make the overall team deeper and better.

we are going to need a solid body in the middle off the bench, when we play the ZAGS, (CBS TV),their 7 ft center and highly rated wingman Harris. Unless we add an early home game we start out with 2 tough road games , then 3 more quality road games, so great chance for AW-0 , BC, to establish their place on the bench, Shelton has the ability but his knees are the ?. Early time to show how good we are. The coach hinted today on the radio - Practice may begin OCT 15

And this year, October 15th falls on a Friday. So practice will begin on October 15th. I think Fisher had the men's first practice on a Saturday last year.
