I don't want to take away from any football news. It is so exciting to hear what is going on at Montezuma Mesa with Brady Hoke and staff....But....
I have been checking around as much as I can about one of the basketball players that everyone seems to have questions about.
Alec Williams the soph forward who played very little last year.
I am hearing very good things about Alec (if my contacts are correct, and they are closer than I am).
I am hearing that the staff is very excited about his play, his progress, and that over the next two years he is going to become a solid player and a key player in the rotation.
If so that would be great.
From what I can tell he can hit the mid range jumper, has very nice low post moves, and is a beast underneath with his banging and size.
I hope I am right and I hope my sources are right. We may see much more from Alec this season.

Great to hear Steve. I have been saying since the basketball season ended that in the next year or two that Alec would be a solid contributor. He does have a nice mid range jumper. I don't know how much we will see him this upcoming season cause we are so deep up front already but the year after, yeah.

I've noticed he was a big guy with a soft shooting touch, makes good jumpers and has nice shooting range. I'd like to see him go strong more often, bang for rebounds, dunk on guys.

I forgot which game it was but during halftime I made it a point to watch Alec since I had seen so little of him during the games.
He was just casually shooting threes--and making them at about an 80-90% clip, no exaggerating. I was definitely impressed with his outside shooting (granted it's different in game situations, stress, defense etc..) and look for him to be a solid contributer his junior and senior years.
Hypothetically speaking, what would you guys think about him using his red shirt this year? Seems to me we have enough depth up front and then we could have him for three years after this year's class of seniors graduates.

Having him for "3 more years" only means we forgo a recruit for 2014 and wait until 2015. Who knows at this point what that means compared to having Alec a year beyond what would have been his senior year. I say play him this year. Red Shirt years cost a player an entire year, if they decide later to transfer. Alec could become a good player but I expect the Aztecs to be at a point where our average recruit in 3 years will be better than his upper limit of achievement.

Steve, Is there any talk about him redshirting this year. With White, Thomas, Carlwell, Leonard, Cheriet (sp?) and Shelton, the front line looks crowded this year. Have you heard anything.

Nice to hear that info Steve. Last year when I saw him pay he looked extremely slooooooow and seemed to be carrying a lot of baby fat. Has he lost weight and improved his speed/movement? Otherwise I don't see him being a fit in the rotation.

One other thing a red shirt year does is kill the D1 experience he would have this year. That experience will be real important for 2011-2012. We could have a whole new front line. If Tim's knees aren't want we all hope and Kawhi opts to leave, having a more experienced Alec would be a big plus. An Alec Red shirt is a bad idea for Alec and the Aztecs.

A redshirt year would make sense with the depth we should have but . . last year should have been his redshirt year, especially with Fisher refusing to play him in blowouts (due to weight issues, I believe) and adjusting to college life and play. But it's possible Williams could contribute more than Cheriet this year and take his minutes if he is physically in shape. His shooting, ball handling and passing might all be better than Cheriets and if he is a more aggressive rebounder and interior player he should be a rotation player next year. I hope he gets at least 8-10 mins per game next year and has lost enough weight (gained quickness) that he can play both SF and PF. Lots of talent if Shelton and White stay healthy (but I assume they will miss 5-7 games combined which will bump everyone's minutes up a few), projected minutes at SF/F/C... Thomas (30) White (27) Leonard (30) bench Shelton (12) Carlwell (9) A Williams (6) J Franklin (6) Cheriet (0)

I think Alec Williams is again the odd man out this season. Too much talent and experience ahead of him. He may get time pending the seemingly inevitable Shelton knee and/or B White ankle injury.
I think Mehdi will contribute anywhere from 5 to 8 minutes a game. He may get more once in a while and he may not see the floor at all a few times.

I agree on the bad idea of Alec red shirting and I especially can't see Fisher going with a red shirt on Alec because of last season. Fisher has said more than once that if Cheriet had not red shirted last year, we would have won 2 more games. I'm sure he will not want to get in the same situation this year with a short bench if injuries occur.

If Shelton is healthy, I just don't see how there is any way Fisher gives Alec some PT, this team is just super deep. A redshirt seems like a great idea, but only if fisher sees him playing a larger role in the upcoming few years.

Alec Williams won't redshirt and if he doesn't see the floor he will move on

What kind of "D1 experience" will he get if all he does is ride the pine? He'd still be on the bench as a redshirt, the only difference is that he'd be in a button up shirt instead of his uniform. I think he can be a good player, just not this year. If he transfers out I think that is shortsighted. He should see light at the end of the tunnel after this season.

The redshirt discussion should not be taken seriously. No need to ask "insiders" about it. I just threw the question out there to get a conversation going. Nothing more.
