Unfortunately for us, it appears that this will be another Christian Heyward case. Mr. Shepard is understandably waiting for, and will likely sign with, the biggest name (prestige-wise) who'll reach out to him. I tend to agree. I don't think he has any intention of coming either to New Mexico or here. IMO he is waiting for some more other big names...like a Kansas or someone...to surface and will go with a bigger brand name. I think if it were between us, New Mexico and OK State, we'd have a really good shot once he makes visits....but now that UCONN in the mix, and probably others to come...I think he'll pick the biggest stage. I think Norvel is probably our best shot right now as long as he gets his grades together. Hopefully we land him. I think Pelle is even more so a guy looking for any big name to sign with over us. Shepard, who knows, think he just loves the spotlight

some of you who know more than the rest of us seem to have Shepard leaning away from the Aztecs and Shabazz leaning away from UNLV - if/when those dominos fall, does that lean Pelle back towards Vegas?
and if so, what's the popular backup plan for that final scholly? since we're hoping that after last spring's near-misses, there IS a backup plan that probably includes over recruiting
so who's next?

If Shep dont come, i would hold it for next year January is just as good as Shepard. If he qualifies, I think he should be our last recruit. Taft beat Fairafx a few days ago in a preview of the top LA City teams. Westchester will always have something to say about this .. and a few other schools. But I think January will win the LA City POY award and challenge for CA POY as well. Don't get me wrong ... Shepard is a stud, but I think we will be thrilled to land January once he continues to climb the rankings in the next few months. www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-0122-taft-fairfax-20120122,0,6040672.column

Reading everything, it's fairly obvious we are still in his top 2 and probably his favorite. Uconn jumped in wayyy after SDSU and NM, which means something. Everyone's saying the guy has a great relationship with Bland, he's seen Fisher excel with similar players to him who can handle the ball like Kawhi and Jalen, Jalen's one of his idols and of course we have Jalen's coach, and one of the few things he mentions on what he's looking for is weather cuz he's a Texas kid who hates the cold. I'm pretty sure SD > Storrs. And if you follow his twitter, every fanbase who's recruiting him tweets him but he's only retweeted SDSU tweets for awhile, including since Uconn offered. It's time to stop with the mentality that we're the little school who has no chance outrecruiting the big boys.

We need to recruit Nigel Williams- Goss #0. He will be a pro. Best defender on the team, great IQ, can score.

He is much better than Wes. Goss can do whatever a coach ask. He can get in the lane and either score or dish it anytime. He can even guard the best guard. I tivo'd the simeon and the bishop gorm game and he guarded Parker and shabazz a lot and did great even though he was much shorter. I wouldn't worry about how much he shoots in the high school level, coach can teach him to be more selective. He has all the tools you could want just needs a good coach. Anyone know a coach better than Fish?

It's time to stop with the mentality that we're the little school who has no chance outrecruiting the big boys. You make a lot of good points and I think we may be a half-notch below some of the Pac-12 schools out west as far as where recruits want to go but that doesn't mean that we can't make up that ground on the right kid. If there wasn't the Fisher/Jalen Rose/Bland thing for Shepard then maybe we wouldn't be able to overcome that gap...but as has been mentioned before, we do have that connection. What I do think is that SDSU is no longer a fall back for top California recruits but a place that kids know they will play coming in (if you have skills, you will play right away for Fisher), a great home court, great location and a team that wins. Last year was huge (obviously) but this year is just as big as far a recruiting. Being ranked near the top 10, being 17-2, getting a lot of national love in our transition year just proved that we have a 'program' that can be a great place for these kids.

I too like January, as he is long, plays stellar defense and isn't a full out scorer, so he wouldn't disrupt the offense as much as someone like Shep would. I think we just need a presence on the block and someone who's going to alter shots and January would be a PERFECT fit.

As far as recruiting January while he's committed to UTEP, it isn't like Fish was mad at Self because he recruited KY out from under him as much as he was annoyed that Self didn't call Fish and ask if KY was opening up his recruitment again (as Self claims happened). If Fish has made a courtesy call to Tim Floyd and made sure everything was on the up-and-up then it's not as shady as what Self did.

I have no problem with these kids taking their time and deciding on a school at their own pace. If they are good enough to know they have offers out there, then more power to them. We need to remember that this is the most important decision they will make up to this point in their lives. If anyone of us were in this high demand, we would hold out for the best job possible. Obviously, I want him to choose us and early, but would never fault a kid for doing what's best for him. Keep in mind, we are lucky with coach stability, but how many college kids bail out for a better job as soon as it's open, leaving their recruits in the wind.
