What the Rivals article doesn't say is that ASU actually won a share of the NC in 1976 after defeating Nebraska in the Fiesta Bowl. There was the AP Coaches Poll and the UPI Writers Poll in those days and ASU was voted #1 in one of them, with Oklahoma being voted #1 in the other.
I also think the Rivals guy has fumbled the ball in comparing Boise to 1977 ASU. The apt comparison is Utah. Yeah, Utah is moving not from the WAC to the Pac but from the MWC, but their program is very similar to ASU's in the sense of having been merely good for years and then being dominant for half a dozen seasons before moving to the Pac along with another far less successful football program. Utah is going to discover like ASU did that playing in the rain at the Washington schools isn't all that easy even when the Huskies or the Cougars are lousy. And however good TCU may be, the Horned Frogs never put even half as many fans in their stadium as does USC nor do they have close to half the pagentry of the Trojans to contend with.
Wanna know how Utah will fare in the Pac? Just see ASU, which has hosted how many Rose Bowls?
