"7. Chuck Long Occupation: Former San Diego State head football coach; current University of Kansas offensive coordinator.
Compensation: $715,900 per year.
Summary: Fired as Aztecs football coach in fall 2008 after going 9-27, Long was guaranteed his yearly salary through the end of 2010. The twist? A contract clause stipulating that Long's payments would end as soon as he found a new gig -- effectively giving Long incentive to not test the job market, given that he was unlikely to make anything close to the same amount somewhere else. Perhaps as a result, Long spent 2009 keeping regular campus office hours working on "projects and analysis" -- exactly the kind of stuff we do when we're actually watching YouTube or poring over NCAA tournament brackets.
Fortune Quotient: Filling the hole in the ozone layer. Though San Diego State hired a $125-an-hour labor relations consultant to work out a settlement, Long left the school to become a Kansas assistant with his final $715,000 payment intact, minus his new Jayhawks salary (reportedly $350,000)."
And people get mad when we talk sh*t about this guy.
Whatever.
Oldie Out

Why would anybody be mad at a guy who signed a contract and then expected the words of that contract to be honored?

Of course contracts should be honored. Also, people should be honorable.

I am sure that Chuck Long agrees with Steve. He thought he deserved more time. Indeed, he had been promised he had it. Then he got fired.
If you were Chuck Long and felt you had been hung out to dry. Would you take the SDSU money? Or go looking for a new job that would less than half what your contract stipulated?
I take the money, myself.

If you want to place blame, look at who hired Long. We had much better options.

We should all be sensitive to poor Mr. Long who was forced to hang around the SDSU campus for a year. Poor bastard. I take back all the negative things I ever said about the guy. Thank god for all his recruits that will be playing this year.

I'm assuming you haven't signed that type of contract yet in your life? If you had, you would expect all the money due to you. As for Chuck Long recruits.....(And I know you posted tounge in cheek)....I am very excited about them.....Most of them are now upper classmen and they will lead us to a bowl game.

Why would anybody be mad at a guy who signed a contract and then expected the words of that contract to be honored? I do recall that Chuck Long took a really long time to "sign" on the dotted line. (IIRC, he was hired in December 2005, and didn't actually sign his contract until August 2006.) I recall there was disagreement on how the buy-out would work...

As a lawyer, I've negotiated a lot of contracts. In no way was my post meant to fault Coach Long for taking the money. Of course he should, he and his representatives negotiated it in good faith. However, the representatives for SDSU who negotiated the terms should be fired. I was only attempting to point out that none of us should feel sorry for Coach Long and he certainly should not be immune from criticism for his horrible won loss record. I think Long was actually a pretty decent recruiter as evidenced by the talent level of the Juniors and Seniors on this team. However, he couldn't coach them up.
