So as my summertime football anticipation is really churning, I got to thinking about what might be missing from our football games (...aside from fans ). I think we could really use some tradition up in the stands. When I was in the marching band (yeah, yeah, I know, I have been playing that card around here a lot lately heheh) - in any case, when I was in the marching band we used to do something I always thought was a lot of fun and got us excited for the game. Before the team came out, and before we ran out onto the field ourselves, we would be waiting in the tunnel. After a few minutes, a few guys would start to all call out, "AAAAZZZZZZTTTEEECCCSS" over and over, fairly slowly - AZ being longer than TECS if that makes sense. Every time it was said, more and more people chimed in, and it would get nice and loud. In the tunnel, it sounded really cool - I might even go so far as to say it could be intimidating. But imagine a stadium full of people slowly, but loudly, chanting "AAAAZZZZZZTTTTTTTEEEEECCCCCSSSSS", in anticipation of the team coming out on the field. It would remind the opposition that they are now in our house. And it would remind our TEAM that they are at home. Obviously, this would have to start with a decent sized group of people sitting together in the stands (student section?? organized AztecMesa board members??). They would have to be persistent. And maybe they stomp their feet and make that nice deep rumbling sound to go along with it. People may not catch on the first game, but I guarantee, if you do it while sitting near the band, you will have at least 200 band members at your disposal for something like this - and they love making noise. Hell, if there are only 3 of you in the stands, run over and tap the tuba players on the back to join you - they love that stuff Just an idea I thought I would throw out there. This doesn't have to be our "thing", but we need something. Anything. The Show made it fun to go to basketball games, even when we were worse than bad. Their antics healped breathe life into the flat tire that was our basketball program. And now The Show has grown beyond just an identity of a group of loyal fans - it is a well known Aztec tradition. Maybe even advertise The Show around campus somehow through the week and really get on campus students involved. Get them excited to be a part of something beyond just a "student section". Something unique and something to be proud of. I don't know. And now I am starting to ramble, so I'll cut it off here. I am not sure if I will be able to make it into town for any of the games this year as I am on the east coast - but if I can, I would love to be a part of whatever we can start.

Having Monty on the field with a blazing spear would send the crowd into a frenzy. And bringing back the old Monty Uniform along with that blazing spear would be nice too.

Having Monty on the field with a blazing spear would send the crowd into a frenzy. Bring it back. Loved it when he would throw the spear at the opposing sideline.

While I do think Monty was awesome (and has maybe been a little hit and miss over the last 5 years or so), I am really interested in what things we - as fans, students, alumni, etc - can do to get others interested, coming back to games, looking forward to Saturdays, wearing gear around town. There has been a lot of talk about how we do this, and I am just putting another angle out there. It has to start somewhere. If we on this board are the most loyal ones around (like we generally claim to be), it falls at least in part on us to figure out how to right the ship. I want to take some responsibility, even from far away, to do what I can to be a part of the exciting future of SDSU. I don't have money, so this is the next best thing I can think of (short of always wearing gear, which I do ). There's a lot of talk about how things used to be 10-40 years ago. But what about the students who are graduating now? Are they going to have much to look back on with fondness when it comes to their football experience? Did they even get out to a single game? And do you think they will come back once they have graduated to relive the good 'ol days? We may have lost a decade's worth of potential fans since 1999. So I say, lets give them a reason to show up. Winning will help that a whole lot - but make them feel like they are a part of something special, a great program in the making, and they will come back either way.

As a long time Aztec-sufferer I have seen a lot of great things come and go. I remember Aztec bowl, the Wins, Killer bees, The special teams, the Brawls(Fresno,Miami and the UCLA fans),fire works and the chariot races. But losing killed the attendance the student support and any traditions we had left. Only winning will bring it back. And if and when we do start winning the question will be if the Athletic Dept, Alumni, Marketing dept will be ready. The need to get their S% t together. They need to get the students, band and the Cheerleaders in the same area near the field. Make sure there are people to take your parking money, have enough concession stands open and enough people to man them. Stop switching sidelines and changing uni's and built the Traditions again. WIN and they Will Come!

Bring back the Chicken. He is an Alum.
Did you know we took 10,000 fans to watch us play Long Beach in Anaheim.
Does that tell you how far we have fallen?

Bring back the Chicken. He is an Alum. If he's gonna charge SDSU for appearances at football games that desperately need his presence, then he's no alum as far as I'm concerned. Do you work for free?

Having Monty on the field with a blazing spear would send the crowd into a frenzy. Man, you got that Right!!!!! The only problem with that is the Admin. will not allow that to happen. And, it was such a beautiful and dramatic tradition! It does help that the Aztec Warrior can still blow the conch shell. When I hear that I can get fired up especially if it is loud. It takes big lungs to get a loud sound. But, everyone yelling in unison (start slowly, and get louder as you go) Azzzzzzzzz...tecs! That would definitely be great to do!
