It very much is a double standard. Part of it I think comes from the way Gibson did it, lashing out at a police stop - it made for a better story and more of a fall from grace type moment even though he had made some outlandish homophobic comments in the past (And now with these tirades that have been released he might be the best unintentional comic of all time); Stone is a nut-job conspiracist, so I think some of it gets glossed over that way. The response to the two is: wow the matinee idol has lost his mind and what isn't under the sway of Stone's various imaginary elements of control.
I think it was Chris Rock that had one of the best jokes on the subject: ~ I ain't got time to hate jews, to cut white people into little groups...I hate all white people.

William, I think the main reason that the media goes so hard for Mel is that he is a real celebrity and generates a ton of magazine sales and tv analysis time when he gets into trouble. The media doesn't go hard after people unless there is money to be made. I mean who cares about Oliver Stone?? You have taken this aspect into your thought process on this right? And if you think Mel is getting too much media attention....how bout Bristol Palin working People, US and the rest of the mags for big paydays so the public can hear about her trailer trash life. Its all about the money.

Its all about the money. Guys, Mel is just a Guy who likes his drink. When he has been drinking, he likes to spout off and use foul language. I have had many drinking buddies in the Navy years ago who were far worse than him. Nobody gives it much mind. Very few sailors are authorities on anything, so if they are drunk, what they say provided it does not start a fight with another drunk has no value. Is Mel an authority on genetics or sociology? The Answer is no, so just like the drunken sailors who are always good fun, Mel is just a drunk spouting off. We should let him enjoy his drink and forget about his drunken ranting. A man should be left to be a man. You hear what I am saying? YOu guys are not gossips, are you?

I heard a great joke in a comedy cub in Edinburgh, this guy gets up and says ,who would think Mel Gibson could play a Scot but there he is an Alcoholic and a Racist. The crowd roared with laughter.
