It's less than an hour drive from ELP to Las Cruces. That's why UTEP and NMSU are such big rivals.
You actually can fly commercially into Las Cruces but it's a PITA. Mesa Airlines has puddle jumper service that starts in ABQ and makes several stops along the way. It's easier to just fly into ELP and make the hour drive.

Non-stop $134 one-way "Wanna get away" fares leaving SD on Friday at 3:30 arriving in El Paso at 6:15. Return trip Sunday at 1 PM, gets into SD at 1:45 PT.
