He has served 8 years as president of Brazil. There is no question that he is a leftist. When he was elected I read that Brazil was on it's way to hell in a handbasket. There was no way that a leftist could not ruin the country and the economy.
Turned out very different. How do conservatives explain this?

Who cares about Brazil? If it works for them....great. Maybe we can ship our illegals down there. They all speak the same language. Well, Portugese is close enough!

I don't understand it myself. Do you?

No I don't. But I never researched it either. My father-in-law ran an insurance business in Rio for eight years. I will defer to him.

What is it with you libs and Lola? Is it that she looks like a woman and talks like a man?
I know double digit unemployment, double digit inflation, a massive underclass and rampant violence is a progressives wet dream but I'd like to see the US do a little better.

We are going to have a Socialist Utopia. It won't be communism, but will make Lenin proud and Marx even prouder. I can see his spirit in Washington pulling the strings to make the Change that is needed an effective policy.

Brazil's ability to fund the dole is similar to that of Norway's, they have energy independence. And so that begs the question - how best will America become energy independent? Solar Panels, Windmills and the Chevy Volt? or Increased Nuclear power, Coal power, Natural Gas power and domestic Oil production? Or all of the above?

There will be nearly free alcohol for the masses and unlimited Alcohol for the transportation needs of the country.

Do you really believe this crap, afan? What "crap" is that? www.nuso.org/upload/evento/Costa%20Vaz%20Brazil.pdfWhat you and I know about Brazilian monetary policy would fit into a thimble but here's a document for you to peruse at you leisure. The gist of it is that Lula's policy is largely the same as his predecessor; tight currency controls, transparency, an independent central bank and a reduction in public debt as a means of currency stabilization. His policies are described as Neo-liberal. That's not liberal as in American politics liberal but liberal in classical economic terms, which more describe Republican views . The author in fact criticizes Lula for NOT being Keynesian enough. Nevertheless, Brazil still suffers from a 10+% unemployment rate, still has an inflation rate that has stabilized somewhere around 8 or 9%, still has a large underclass and it's slums are still some of the most violent on the planet. The whole case FOR Lula seems to be that he's the one leftist on the planet that has managed to not destroy the economy with which he is charged. He's managed that feat by....wait for it now...NOT being a leftist in actual practice. Funny none of you libs ever mention Venezuela as an economic miracle when Chavez is the one true blue leftist with policies much more aligned with Obama's ; increased government spending and control over every sector of the economy.

Socialism can be made to work. It is a wonderful system that has benefited Europe (in particular Germany), China and Brazil tremendously.
