I started following SDSU football in 1999 - my freshman year, and my first year as a Marching Aztec. Every year, the season would start with optimism. "This could be our breakout year!" "We have the talent to make it to a bowl game." Comments I have heard every summer for more than a decade. Sadly, to my recollection, I have not seen my football team have a winning season. I don't really remember ever having experienced the excitement of my team pulling off an upset. I certainly never had the coveted band payoff of taking a bus or a plane to a bowl game - to represent the school we were all so proud to be attending. And really, if any band could have earned it purely through loyalty, it would have been your Marching Aztecs. So many close calls, so many lost opportunities, and so much disappointment at the end of the season. We soaked up all of the early season optimism. And lived every painful moment of our team's losses. We brought our enthusiasm to every single football game from start to finish - and it sure wasn't because we didn't know what was going on. The band doesn't get to leave early.
BUT. Every summer, hope springs eternal. I can't help myself. I don't care what the hell our win/loss records have been for the past decade. I don't care about the mistakes of years past. I don't care who our coach used to be, and I certainly don't care what the nay-sayers (many of them home-grown) say about MY Aztec football team. I get excited because, win or lose, I am always proud to be an Aztec.
So feel free, all you armchair coaches and sideline analysts, to say what you will, good or bad. I know I have set myself up for serious heartbreak in the past, but who knows...maybe this could be our breakout year. ;D
Fight on Aztecs!

So it has been written/promised to all of us Aztecs....
Keep your spirits high, because we WILL win again.
And I do believe, that this is the year we gain recognition as a rebounding program.
Thank you so much for this wonderful post, aztecmoxie

Aztecjake; I feel alot like you do - except that after many years, nothing - absolutely nothing - has been promised to me. Except that I get to love my team and be a part of whatever they become. Let the fun begin!

Oh, on the contrary, please refer to the 3rd and 4th line in the first verse:
Fight on and on ye Aztec men Sons of Montezuma We will win again Keep your spirits high Never bow a knee We will fight till victory
Fight on and on ye Aztec men Proudly raise your banners high For it's the Red and Black Hail to our team San Diego Aztecs fight!

Assuming Lindley remains healthy througout the season, it will all come down to the trenches. If our O-line has really developed in the weight room and our D-line can simply hold its own w/o the linebackers having to move out of position to cover their insufficiencies, this team has the play makers and a solid year of experience that can take us to a bowl game. If our O-line does not have enough push to provide a solid running game, I see a five win season.

AF, WYO, B?U overrated. CSU will be simply bad and UNLV will be improved (if they can keep their staff out of jail and dont have to dig to deep into the lineup).
Surprises this year- special teams, Dline and running game. Watch our RB's- keep hearing vast improvements inspite of the the ppoor line (see scheme).
This team will surpise- my prediction 7 W's bank on 6. All bets off it Lindley gets hurt.

Their baldheaded men can usually deliver both on the offensive and defensive lines. Are there any fast 340 pound well muscled baldheaded 26 year olds (Fully developed males usually reach their peak in manhood at 26 or 27) who never started college? If so, we might be able to use them on the Mesa.

ready to lace 'em up. pass the kool-aid. We're undefeated! I'm "watching" the WYO-UNM replay on theMTN as I spend the morning cleaning out my files. All it reminds me of is the freaking snow will be returning.. I hate being cold and I hate living in the freaking snow, which is why living in SOCAL for, (barely still), most of my life just seemed to work out. I dunno know, ever since I read about what 71 year old Ron McBride has accomplished at Weber State, I really feel good about my expectations for Coach Hoke and this years team. (And anybody who wants to point out Weber's level of competition, I do believe they could quite possibly if not probably beat the Aztecs at this stage). Let the games begin..

Moxie,
Your post got to me. Love your attitude. History is just that....history....it really doesn't matter now. SDSU football is destined for greatness. We are truly a "sleeping giant" now......but not much longer.

Your point is well taken, but losing track of what was on theMTN, it would be nice if we wouldn't be reminded of games we had no business losing last year, (WYO-SDSU). Sometimes theMTN is a pain in the butt.. ;D Time to put on some music! P.S. Heading into halftime lockeroom...I'm sorry, but Coach has GOT to lose some freaking weight!

Have you noticed how often he brings them up in subtle ways whenever he discusses last year? If anything I'm confident he's going to pour it on them this time so they can't make a comeback. Makes no difference whether we're at home or away. I won't venture a guess about other teams, but those two, hell yeah.

We need more like you around here to help keep the spirit up. It is unfortunate that during your years in school with the band you did not get to witness a winning season. But, let me tell you with your 'tude, and the team's determination we may see it provide results this season. It will be worth it, and you will love every minute when it happens!!! ;D Go Aztecs!!!

I feel all the excitement fellas! I can't wait for this year to start, it's bowl time baby! I know it's been a little bit, but I just came across this nice video remembering the life and career of our legendary coach, Coach Coryell which I thought was a nice wrap-up of this great man's life and times: 619sports.net/7398/remembering-don-coryell-video/

That's a great vid. I really am hoping that Hoke and co. are calling on the team to live up to the winning traditions of the past. You watch enough highlight reels, and you remember that SDSU football has had some outstanding moments and equally as exciting seasons. Time to bring that back!

We are truly a "sleeping giant" now......but not much longer. My tag line from the old board stated that the sleeping giant was going to wake up because Hoke was going to kick it in the nuts! That's the mentality he has and what the team needs.

I'm with you, Moxie. 99 was my first year at SDSU, too; and I watched my first Aztec game at Qualcomm against USF. I remember the team was coming off a bowl game against UNC, and I was expecting great things from them. Sadly, it wasn't meant to be, and still each year I hope to see a successful team. Thankfully, Hoke gives me confidence that he can turn things around, much as Steve Fisher did (who, coincidentally, also began his career at SDSU in 1999). Fisher won 4 games, went .500, then won the MWC tournament and hopefully Hoke can accomplish the same thing and then we'll all be smiling. ;D
I'll just add that although the team wasn't successful during my SDSU days, I did meet some cool players and I'm thankful that a few of them (Osgood and Morrison, specifically) went on to find success in the NFL.

Thanks all - I am amped. The reality is that every single person who gets their butts in the seats makes a difference during the game. Yes, the team is out there working every day, pushing to get better and better. But if all they can hear is the echo of their helmets and pads crashing off of the cement walls in that stadium, will they be able to play outside themselves? The team needs to win in order to bring fans, and fans need to show up for the team to have a home field advantage. When I am in town, I take control over my part of the game - I can't wait for others to get in there and do their part as well!
