28 years old. 4.52 ERA - 4.03 before the Padres and Rockies (yesterday) roughed him up in his last two starts. 3.71 ERA last year. Padres will control in 2011. Paul Maholm Player News from ESPN: The Padres appear close to obtaining Maholm, according to numerous sources, including Scott Miller of CBS Sports and Dan Hayes of the North County Times. Spin: Buster Olney of ESPN and Jim Bowden of Fox Sports are also reporting the Padres are well down the road of acquiring Maholm, who is 6-9 with a 4.52 ERA for the Pirates. If he is brought to San Diego, Maholm figures to be at the back end of the Padres rotation, likely giving Mat Latos more time off down the stretch.

Nice pickup - pending price tag. Young player that will be in the rotation next year. Better defense and Petco will move his ERA in the 3.40 range.

Padres source: NOT close to Maholm deal, per high-ranking team source. S.D. 'Just fishing.' 8 Minutes ago.
Pirates seeking ML-ready starting pitcher for Maholm, per team source. Padres not biting.

It would be nice to get a pitcher of his caliber to alternate with Latos down the stretch and then have Latos in the post season.
But it wouldn't make a lot of sense to give up an MLB ready pitcher.
I also think we should start Tim Stauffer if we want to give Latos rest.

Heard his name from Corey Brock as well. Not digging the .290 opponents BA.

Brett Myers from Houston would be a great pickup. Expect to give up something worthwhile. He would be a free agent after this year. ($8 million 2011 but Myers has option to bail).
3.10 ERA in 21 starts.
Big extra: 3 starts against the Cardinals 21 innings 4 ER total. They could be our first playoff opponent.

WHAT THE CRAP NO WAY THAT WOULD BE AMAZING Dude, I don't know.....for Castro? It'd be exciting....but he's almost 37, his average is 20 points below his average and his on base % 50 points below. He's a great player.....all the tools...average, steals, defense, throwing arm, occasional power..... It all depends how much you value Castro. He's the Padres #1 minor league pitching prospect, and you could envision him and Latos anchoring the rotation for a decade. But again, who knows if he'll pan out in the show or not. There's always risk. Given the organizations ability to produce pitchers, I'd roll the dice perhaps. Two years ago this would be a no brainer....maybe some feel it still is....just looking at both sides.

Just scanned Mlbtraderumors.com (a good site), and a couple others...didn't see any mention of Suzuki.

Padres pressing for Ryan Ludwick......but there's conflicting reports on if its done or not. www.mlbtraderumors.com/10:58am: Krasovic tweets that a three-team deal is pending the union's OK: the Padres get Ludwick, the Cardinals get Jake Westbrook and a Padres prospect, and the Indians get prospects.

HUGE move. We gave up NOTHING. Highway robbery for the Padres if Ludwick can avoid the injury bug.
