He played SS for Houston last year but played 3B for Balt this year. When should he play SS for the Padres since his defense is not very good? Stats below may help decide.
Padres Starters percentage of outs via ground balls. 57.3% Garland 56.9% Corriea 54.3% Richard 45.0% Latos 43.6% LeBlanc
He can play 3B for Headley versus LHP. His 3 year average V.LHP is .303.

Guys in the clubhouse specifically asked Hoyer for Tejada. Oscar Salazar chief among them, as he was a teammate of Tejada's with the O's. Good guy in the clubhouse. He's basically going to play shortstop until Eckstein comes back and then he'll play some third base when Headley has to face a tough lefty, since his average is under the Mendoza line against southpaws. Not a blockbuster move, but Pelzer was quickly playing his way out of prospect status after being highly touted coming into this year. He'll probably be a bullpen guy in Baltimore.

That's fine and all, but I'd rather trade for guys based on production. But then, we didn't give up anything big, so I am okay with it. Would have been nice if we could have gotten Werth or Jose Bautista, as also rumored, but it is what it is. Bautistas price tag was too high for him, considering he doesn't have a track record of THIS type of success wave he is currently on.

I don't know how I feel about this. I can tell you one thing, it doesn't get me excited.

He will have a big hit or two before the season ends. I think it's a good move.

sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=5421184Mentions Headley's struggles against LHP. Speaking of Headley, I am beginning to wonder if he will ever be more than a useful utility player that can play a few positions. And guys like that DO have value. I just don't see him as a future everyday guy. You can't play corner infield nor outfield and carry a .700 OPS. And it's not just Petco, as his road OPS is lower than home. I will say that last year and the year before he did hit very well outside of Petco. He's had 1,300 at bats now and has had a very consistent .720 OPS. For those of you not into advanced stats, .800 is considered good. .750 would be "decent". For comparison sakes, Adrian Gonzalez is a career .875 guy, and had a stellar .958 last season. Back to Hundley, his defense is also...just okay.....and he strikes out alot more than he walks. Ryan......who do the Pads have in AA and AAA that has a bright future at 3B? Darnell? I told you before I'm not sold on what I have read on Logan Forsythe, he strikes me as another Headley type. Might hit .270, no power. Headley: sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/8057

Pelzer's walks have skyrocketed this year, which is basically because he's a 2 pitch guy at this point, he played himself out of the rotation in San Antonio.

I'm sorry, I didn't look up a stat before I posted like in your in depth analysis above. You obviously take this message board stuff very seriously.

The difference between Tejeda's .270 and 7 homeruns and Everth Cabrera's .200 and 2 homeruns is astounding.
I am excited for this move. He'll start at short stop for most of the remaining games and bat cleanup.
He's not an all star.. but he's a solid major leaguer. Evereth Cabrera is not.

Just last year with Houston Tejada hit .313 overall and .326 V.LHP. Going from a last place team, back to the NL where he played the last two years, and onto a playoff team will be just what he needs. He changes leagues so his BA going back to .000s means a symbolic new start to the year. He won't play full time and that should help too.
Headley will be helped by getting more rest. He has played every game. He should rest against lefties and he will be a great option off the bench when a righty reliever comes in and as a defensive replacement.
Tejada will be our #1 pinch hitter against lefties when not starting.
He should replace an outfielder. Most likely Cunningham. When Eckstien comes back he might replace Salazar or Stairs.
Don't be surprised if the Padres end up with Ted Lilly from the Cubs.

You make you feel a little better about Tejada Bill. I would love it if we ended up with Ted Lilly! One other thing. When Tejada plays SS and gets a hit late in the game, Cabrera will pinch run and replace him in the field. This will happen unless he is not at least the tying run. If we are ahead we need the defense, if we are behind or tied we need the speed. Cabrera is 33-13 stealing in his career, and can go first to home with the best of them.

Sure this wasn't a "big spalsh" trade but it's hard to argue that it didn't make the Pads better. Tejada vs. Cabrera at SS: WAY better bat, less range on D but we needed another bat in the lineup and not a black hole. And by all accounts Miggy's a great clubhouse guy. Add to that we didn't give up a front line prospect for him.
Good trade.
