Some of you have not tied money to reality.
No crowds no money.
Fans better wake up. We talked about all these issues, but now they are in our face, and should be real to everyone.
We have a small window of opportunity. Hoke has to win now and then stay for a few years.
I hope he can be the next Coryell because that is what we need.
San Jose has to be turning a lot worse.
When I went to SDSU we had a lot of State schools with football.
When Santa Bara dropped football I though it would help. They had a lot of D1 teams scheduled, so we knew the teams and the dates, but none of them wanted any part of us and we needed to play 1/2 our games against D1 to be D1. We helped Fresno get to be D1 and may be Long Beach, and Fullerton. La State and San Fernando dropped out as D2.

This is the most populous state in the union, half or so of that within 150 miles, a state that produces top rate athletes in all sports. If we are spending 90k on assistant coaches and another 140k on out of state/international players for tennis then that should stop immediately. There is no reason to foot the bill for sports like tennis and golf to spend on extra tuition and extra coaches; there is no reason for football and men's basketball to have more than 5-10 percent out of state and then only if they are impact players, women's basketball should likewise be restricted to instate players. Not to mention, what is the travel costs being billed SDSU to recruit out of state/country?
I don't care if SDSU is good at tennis or golf, I care that SDSU has a sports program and there is no reason that SDSU can't field quality football and men's basketball programs (in the end, the only thing that matters) with California players.

I think Sterk has sent a clear message with the layoffs and now this - it might not be a mandate, but for the head coaches to continue to be employed after contracts run out, it sounds pretty clear: assistants must be paid for by earmarked donation, and I wouldn't be surprised if the the same is true of out of state schollys. |

Nashville has it exactly right. In football, at least, we've started over too many times. That's why I have said that the failure to win those two games late last year was a real blow. The 4-8 we got stuck with did not even match Craft's best year. And there were no wins against teams such as BYU and Utah. Therefore, we tread water in '09 at best.
Another losing season in '10, even if the team does not stink so often as recently, will not do it. Aztec football, which, as we all know, is the key sport, needs a shot in the arm and quickly.
Six and six is the least we should do this year, and that would be a finish not designed to turn heads around the county. Anything less will put us against the wall. And, even with .500 this year, there will be enormous pressure to win in '11.

It is interesting to see what options the dept. is looking at during lean budgetary times. I would be interested in knowing how many out of state scholarships there are at $12,000 + each and what sports they are in. Seven of nine in Tennis tells me a lot. As the article makes clear, football and basketball are not in the mix, so just how much $$ is really on the table for this issue? Also, where does this type idea lead us? For example, another thread makes a big deal about cheerleading being a sport that should be supported by scholarships. Were that view adopted then out of state recruiting would not be important, we'd just win. Apply that to mens sports other than the revenue producers. The Mountain schools have NCAA skiing, will this lead to NCAA surfing? Again, no need for out of state recruiting. Or, if we want to cut costs do we terminate mens golf and bring back mens volleyball limited to California recruiting? The article raised lots of questions for me. Wonder what Sterk is thinking? It really says something about SDSU alumni and SD sports fans when the thought that enough people to keep the football program (and therefore the entire athletic dept.) financially viable cannot bother to buy 10 dollar game tickets unless the team achieves a certain level of success. It just can't get any worse than the support around here.

Yes, this article does not present good news, but don't allow BS to sway you with his alarmist intent. It has to be put into perspective. It's not only SDSU, or Cal schools. This is a nationwide problem whether it be BCS or non-BCS schools.
