While I am not sure they have done this in the past, they may have and I never heard about it, but it made an impression.
So Thursday night the last night of Snow Valley Basketball School we ended up on State street in Santa Barbara at Holdren's Steak and Shrimp. A bunch of us coaches were sitting around and SDSU came up. The manager over heard our conversation and he and I started talking. He played for the men's volleyball team.
All that being said he brought up the fact that he had talked to two separate families that day that had come into the restaurant and were raving about SDSU. He said they had moved their children into the dorms and that athletes where there to great them and helped them move their kids stuff and that this happened all over campus.
Who ever thought this idea up should get a raise. Seems to have made a big impact.

Agreed! This is a great way for our athletic teams to connect with incomiming students and their parents hopefully gain their respect and support for their programs.

Heard the same thing from a family.. When asked, the players said that it was Coach Hokes idea and he wanted the players to help the regular students to do their part to connect the all Aztecs together.. Said that students, athletes, alumni, staff were all in it together!

Good move. Really need to get SDSU's huge student body more into the athletics programs. There's no reason a 12k arena on a campus with 35k students shouldn't sell out every game.

Just another reason ( like having the team attend Coach Coryells Memorial) to believe Coach Hoke will make a huge difference.

Awesome! This is a HUUUUUGE change from the players getting into fights with frat boys. (At least one of those incidents the football team lost too - that is what is unacceptable)

some times small things ,connecting with students can go a long way in getting students to attend games, smart move by who ever came up with the idea and the athletes for coming through, part of the conditioning and PR program, or better yet being involved on campus

Great story, bekays. As others have said, one more reason to like Brady Hoke.

Thanks for sharing bekays. I think this is an immeasurable free advertising (via word of mouth) and certainly an “easy” way for the team to promote itself within the Aztec community by connecting with the student body, which is the hardest group to reach out to. With this concept, the students will feel some connection with the team when they get to know the player(s) who helped them move. In return, the students will want to reciprocate the kind gesture by showing up at their games.
When you immediately get the incoming freshmen or transfers connected with SDSU teams, it will nurture their Aztec spirit. As we can see, it’s already making a positive impression not only with the students but with parents as well. As I mentioned earlier, the long-term effect is incalculable.
