Rick Bay has a new book out called "From the Buckeyes to the Bronx". There's debate about Bay's success as the AD at SDSU, but there's no questioning that he's a true Renaissance man. Among other things, Bay was a national-caliber wrestler, an NCAA Div. 1 National Coach of the Year for wrestling, and last month he was inducted as a member of the National Athletic Directors’ Hall of Fame. He likes ballet and Shakespeare, he ran the Boston Marathon in under 3 hours, he travels extensively, and he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. His publisher's website gives a background summary on Bay that mentions his time at SDSU: hawkinsandcompany.com/Author__Rick_Bay.htmlAnd here's how Rick Bay summarizes his tenure at SDSU: www.thebaywatch.com/San_Diego_State.html

Steve Fisher was an excellent hire. Bay certainly accomplished a lot. Which balanced out the Craft hire that started the football spiral to the bottom. Bay was .500 for important hires.

Actually, considering how much more important success of the football team is to the university's budget than success of the basketball team, he really wasn't close to .500. And of course he mistakenly gave Tollner a contract extension and took too long to fire him, etc., etc. (I'll stop now unless somebody else unaware of the facts reads Frantic's link and lauds the guy.)

Steve Fisher was an excellent hire. Bay certainly accomplished a lot. Long story short, Jerry Tarkanian recommended Fisher to Bay. Thank the Tark instead. Fisher wasn't even on Bay's radar. He was foolishly trying to land Rick Majerus and the Tark, for peanuts. Oddball.

Like the job he did here or not (I didn't), Rick Bay has had a pretty interesting career. And I'll always respect him for resigning over the Earle Bruce firing, one of the worst firings of all time.

His business card says, "I'll call you." Sharks have a week devoted to him. He is, the most interesting man in the world. Sorry, couldn't resist after reading your post ;D

Doesn't the opening line sum it up:
Rick's final position as a sports executive took him to San Diego, where he retired as the Executive Director of Athletics and Special Assistant to the President at San Diego State University.
Even he admits he retired on the job

Click on the "Baywatch" link.
Hit the "Memorium" tab.
Then at the bottom click "see the pictures".
