no new names out there but a recap of who we are supposedly looking at. We have 3+ scholarships remaining for the 2011 class. I'll start small ... Damiene Cain 6'7 PF is a tough and rugged player who rebounds and defends position in the post, and can get his shot off against bigger opponents. Has always been undersized, but always got the job done. Decent athlete.
Ryan Anderson 6'7 SF/PF is more of a finesse, shooting and passing forward. Becoming more physical but not a great post defender or shot blocker. Decent athlete.
The big boys ... Caudill 6'11 270, a physically an imposing player with great hands and footwork and is a good shooter. However he's not fast and can't jump but reports say he gets better and more fluid every time out. (Think Omar Samhan)
Garrett 6'11 250, ex teammate of Tapley has not put up impressive numbers in high school so far, but he's fairly athletic and very big.
Greg Sequele 6'9 225, athletic as hell, but fundamentally very raw. A project with great upside. He plays AAU with Cain, who is much better at this point, but Sequele has better size and athleticism. Ronnie Stevens 6'9 220, Stevens is becoming my #1 draft pick of this bunch. He's a solid rebounder and shot blocker and is athletic and quick.
My "Wish list" ... Stevens C/PF Anderson SF/PF Garrett C

I don't know what happened to Maxey? He was actually a 2010 recruit, but he was young for his class, and I have know idea if he is going to a college or a prep school or neither? He is a player similar to Garrett in that their numbers are not very impressive, but they impact the game with their size by making the opposing players change their shots when they come into the paint. I would love to get 1 true C in Garrett or Maxey and add another PF/C like Stevens, who has been playing well in vegas this week ..."at the inaugural Las Vegas Fab 48 ended when Belmont Shore upended California Supreme 88-80. The explosive playmaking of 5-11 Cezar Guerrero (Bellflower, Calif./ St. John Bosco), the soft shooting touch of 6-8 DeAndre Daniels (TBD) and the dominant inside duo of 6-8 junior Grant Jerrett (La Verne, Calif./Lutheran) and 6-8 Ronnie Stevens (Gardena, Calif./Serra) were too much and eventually wore down the Supreme. sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recruiting/basketball/mens/news/story?id=5403767

Another player I really like is Cain. Everything written about him is positive, other than him being undersized and not crazy athletic but, ... his teams always win. I think worse case scenario he is a Tim Shelton type player (but with healthy knees of course) who can play PF or C. He's also a great student and trying to get into Stanford or possibly Ivy league. "Damiene Cain (Compton Magic, 2011)- His team is playing well in Vegas, and Cain is one of the big reasons why. Similar to Chane Behanan, Cain controls space around him and slows the game down with the ball in his hands. Cain is an under the radar recruit who specialize in producing positive plays that helps a team win." basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1105868

You know basketball pokinsky, but at 6'6" 215, playing center is not an option for Cain. I've never seen Cain play, but for some reason he reminds me of Jer'Vaughn Johnson, who is 6"6 240.

Cain is listed on his high school site (harvard westlake) and AAU site (compton magic) as 6'7 230lbs, not 6'6 205. He will not dominate the post playing C but he could be similar to Amoroso or Shelton who are not C's but just the toughest guy on the court. Yes he's undersized but .... Cain was listed as one of the best players in the country a few years ago (but stopped growing), he will be a 4 year varsity starter at Harvard Westlake, a 2 year starter on one of the best AAU teams in the country and has already won D III player of the year. And just because a player is 6'10 doesn't mean they want to battle for boards and do the dirty work ... but everything I read about Cain uses words like "warrior" "workman mentality" "blue collar", etc. Every team needs a player like that. I believe if he came here, he might never make all conference ... but he would be a 4 year starter at PF and win games for us.

Grant Jerrett is a really good player. Teammate of C.J. Cooper. Very bouncy, lanky athlete.

A new PF name, and he's not even a socal guy. Austin Kuemper PF/C - 6'9 240 is listed as a possible recruit for 2011. He's from Oregon and lists Iowa St, Oregon, Oregon St, USD and SDSU. He is currently the 2nd highest rated recruit in Oregon for 11 and according to espn (87 rating) "a big body power forward with a nice skill set. He hit midrange jumpers off the catch mostly from the high post area. In the low post Kuemper displayed a nice touch over his left shoulder with good extension and follow thru. He is an excellent passer... " His skill set seems similar to another PF recruit Ryan Anderson, ... solid fundamentals but not crazy athletic. sandiegostate.rivals.com/quicklist.asp?School=67&Sport=2&DPosition=32&Position=3&Year=2011&qs=1

thanks, anxiously awaiting which bigs we end up with Agreed, though I am somewhat heartened by the fact that Fisher seems to be on a whole slew of guys who might fit the 4/5 spots.

is our only commit so far Crowder, plus the transfer guard Yes, Thames replaced Shelley .... which means we will have 5 scholies opening with only 1 commit (6'10 Crowder). Assuming Crowder signs we have 4 scolies available ... possibly more with Kawhi leaving early or Sheltons knees ending his career. I don't think either will happen so we should have 4 remaining. A quote regarding Kuemper which has some positive things to say ... Austin Kuemper of Portland based ICP is just a solid big who understands what his strengths and limitations are. A strong, 6-foot-9 insider, Kuemper loves to bang, has some soft touch to 12 feet and plays with an edge to him. Kuemper didn't even avg 1 block per game as a junior (0.8) which is disappointing for a 6'9 high school player. But he sounds like a tough kid that will hold his ground and make you shoot over him ... a la every big BYU has ever had. sandiegostate.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1089671

Click on the other two photos and they ARE Anderson. Or at least Anderson now rather than 3+ years ago.
