Making threats against anyone, including the President, is a crime. Trust me, I teach high school, and have seen students arrested and handcuffed, and led away to Juvie for making threats! This applies to the internet as well.

This applies to the internet as well. Back in the '80s someone I knew was on a local BBS and this idiot 15 year old made a joke about shooting Reagan, who was coming into town. The guy I knew called the Secret Service because he couldn't be totally sure the kid was joking. Kid got a visit from the SS very shortly after they got off the phone. Because of his age and his terror at being questioned by them, they decided he wasn't serious and didn't bust him, but I'll guarantee you that somewhere there's still a file on him. =Bob

Being drunk does not really excuse criminal behavior, but I draw a distinction between a bozo who had a couple too many and a skin-head activist with a long history of speaking threateningly against those with whom he disagrees.
Even if he's a long-time skin head type, 10 years sounds too long to me. I suspect that there are people who have committed pretty nasty crimes of violence who ended up serving 10 year or less.
And don't forget, 10 years in the Fed pen means pretty close to 10 years, as I understand it. Yes, I know, threatening the POTUS is serious business. I hope the judge takes a close look at whether this guy is just a blow-hard or one who might, conceivably, take violent action.
I'll probably get flamed for this position, but that's the way it goes.

The guy had all the weapons to carry out his threat. Including the 50 cal sniper rifle. He's going away for a long time.
He won't be the last either.

Well, that's the joy of being a judge (aimed at those who think that Sotomayor should just rule specifically on the law). Yeah, he had all those weapons, but has he ever shown anything that would suggest he'd actually consider assassinating a political figure? Does it matter if he hasn't? Either way, it goes back to my original point. This guy is in a world of hurt all because he got blitzed and posted something stupid. I got sued not for something I wrote, but because of something I quoted in a response. And don't assume it stops at our borders. Back in the '80s I was on alt.culture.canada, a USENET news group and there was this total A-Hole by the name of Lawrence <something or other> who was a Brit. He was one incredibly nasty troll - far more than I suspect most people on here have ever run into. The news groups were incredibly nasty - total anarchy, no moderators, anything went. His trolls pissed off a lot of people and a couple Canadian knuckleheads thought it was funny to suggest he molested children. He sued them in British court and won. So the point is this - be careful what you write and be careful what you quote. If you think what you are quoting could be consider libel, don't quote it, just respond to it. =Bob
