Very sad news....boy do we need some winning programs to help fund our athletics...!
Which makes me wonder how is ucsd doing in their athletics? Given that they are a state school also and all the new buildings going on are they also under the same budget pressure?

They couldn't have canned a certain marketing person, who shall remain nameless, to keep those coaches on?

baronbob Today 03:51 AM
Time to call a spade a spade when fiscal austerity is needed. All non revenue sports should have a head coach, period. All assistants should be volunteers mor GAs. There is no need for an assistant tennis soccer or golf coach. Directors of Operations are flunkies trying to pick up some coaching savvt. Cut'em in all sports including football and basketball. Fire Fisher's son. That is nepotism. Basketball can get by with 2 assistants..especially with no frosh or JV team.
I don't know what the baron was doing up at 3:51 this morning (having tea with the king perhaps), but except for the Fish Jr. comment, I agree with him.
Baron doesn't mention it but the fact SDSU finished 66th out of 278 schools in the Director's Cup standings yet ended the year with a $1.5M athletics deficit shows that the school has been putting too much of an emphasis on salaries for non-revenue sports. It's sad that it's coming to this but just like tax revenue is paying for a smaller and smaller portion of the cost of academics, tax revenue is going to be paying for a smaller and smaller portion of the athletics department budget so positions need to be funded with that in mind.

How about the UT go and pound sand. I would hate to be laid off and then become public. What a classless act. If the UT needs topics then they should investigate why UofA and ASU are ducking us from their basketball scheduled.

The article also demonstrates that the Athletic Department has adapted pretty well to a serious fiscal crisis. Football revenue dropped from $2.3M to $1.39M, while at the same time the overall Athetic Department generated a surplus of $442,000 last year. And while doing so managed to climb to 66th. in the Directors cup, our highest rating ever. As for the Directors Cup, one needs to realize that SDSU is handicapped in reaching the heights as we do not field as many teams as the leader schools, so it is hard for us to accumulate points. On the budgetary front, reducing the deficit to $1.5M should be considered decent work given the circumstances. Although I do not like seeing people losing their jobs and I do see the need for assistant coaches I believe the Department is on the right track here. Now, all we need to do are two things: (1) Have an above .500 football team that generates some enthusiasim and (2) Improve our fund raising skills. The Fred Noonan School of Navigation.

The school made the announcement, I'm sure, but Voice of San Diego has had several reports when UT personnel have been laid off, including who when they could get the information. =Bob

If you don't like seeing your name in the paper, think twice about working for a city, county, public school, etc.
