I found the comments section interesting. The following comment, "Tavernari shot us out of games as often as he shot us into them", is similar to other BYU fans comments I have seen. Tavernari 3 point shooting 33.3% OOC 45.2% In Conference This is one of those cases where a player has problems early and a fan gets set in his mind what type of player he is. When his game changes he reinforces his perception by explaining away events that don't conform to his view and use events that do conform to his perception to reinforce his belief. He should instead use stats to see a unbiased view of reality. 45.2% is better than Fredette shot 3s overall and much better than Haws. But Haws shot well early and became BYU's darling.

I think your point is well taken, I'd also say that if someone has a few disastrous plays, games or stretches those tend to win out in the mind. One thing I'd say though is you assume that stats which depict an average, are indicative of a single game, it is possible for someone to have a good stat but have horrid games

But stats also don't tell the whole story of the game, or recognize good or bad shot selection. In BYU's 6 losses last year Tavernari shot only 28% from 3 and only 42% overall, with a brutal 1-11 against bitter rival Utah St for their 1st loss of the season. And during BYU's last 3 losses to end the season, he shot a horrible 16% from 3 and 32% overall. His mid season was solid but he started poorly and ended it with a thud. The comment ... "Tavernari shot us out of games as often as he shot us into them" actually seems very fitting.

Only those who don't know the guy wears a tin foil hat and thinks he's the reincarnation of "Hollywood" Henderson. (Not bagging on you, Bill. Just sayin' Bleacherreport is a total farce . . . though they may have gotten this one right.)

I don't know why you would think that. I don't. I fully understand sample size and fluctuations of chance.

Everyone has bad games.

All shooters have bad games, but they also need to recognize when they are having an off night, and pass it or take it inside rather than keep missing and hurting your team. www.mwcconnection.com/2010/2/28/1331081/steve-alford-and-johnathan

I guess they forget games like UNLV where Tavernari was 4-8 shooting 3s and led the team in rebounding, blocks, assists, and scoring, while Jimmer was 2-10 and lead the team in turnovers. Result: BYU 77 - UNLV 73.

The Aztecs are, and should be, the trendy pick to win the MWC. They've got a solid starting 5 and great depth. There's no reason it shouldn't be their year this year.
