sure seem to be better then we have had since Tolner rehired Claude Gilbert. So one old Coryell coach turns our defense around in a couple years.
So Division 2 coaches under Don Coryell were better then most all of our future D1 assistant coaches.
We paid them nothing and had less of them and they had to do more work like finding jobs and renting apartments. We had no dorms for our players. No weight room. No fancy offices or Hall of Champions. We were not on TV. We did not have a great schedule to help us recruit.
Did you know that the players recruited their replacements? How were they able to do so? They had fun playing and winning. It was contagious.
You could take all those old coaches at the funeral and they would out coach any team of coaches today.
The set of coaches we have today are the best set we have had since Don quit.
Can any one name a better set then we now have?
Don had men's men around him. No head coach could motivate like Don.
The boosters did not want to let him down either. We had a Marine who said he had never seen a dressing down like Don could give. You could not look him in the eye.
He never asked a injured player how they were doing during the week. He said if you called them over they would walk normal, but would limp away if you asked them how they were doing.
We had no Aztec Club before Don. No car dealer program etc. etc.

The head coach is trhe key to getting good assistants and to winning. Facilities and location don't mean much. During the early Coryell years we had no facilities. And Wyoming has had some very good teams at times and very few would go there for location.

Coryell was at State during a unique era The 60's had no scholarship limits for D-I schools and they had huge squads. Most of our players were double transfers that started at a D-I then transfered to State after 1 season at a JC. 4-year players did not start until the late 70's with Pete Inge.
as for staffs, Doug Scovil ranks right with Coryell & Gilbert
Doug's 1st staff in 1981 Dave Atkins RB Brian Billick WR Tom Freeman OL Burnie Miller DC Cole Procter DL Steve Shafer Linebackers Doug Smith OL Gary Zauner Special Teams John Featherstone (part-time) John Morello (pt time)
