"Obviously what Turner did when he was 16 years old — shooting two men in a gunfight — was wrong. But he also should be given the opportunity to make up for it."
Should??? And do you really make up for shooting guys, or does someone give you a chance regardless of what you've done? I guess bringing NMSU a few more wins would "make up" for a little violence!!!

gettough, your opinion is the same as mine.
Consider this. CSUN basketball coach Bobby Braswell kicked two players off his team - not just suspended them, kicked them off - for merely having shoplifted along with Braswell's own kid. The NMSU guy frickin' SHOOTS two people yet DeWayne Walker gives him a scholarship? Granted the player was a minor at the time, but come on. If one of the victims had died, he would probably have been tried as an adult.

UNLV's new coach had been using that tactic in Montana for several years. He brought in troubled youths from the inner LA area. I don't know his success rate for turning them around, but he did dominate his conference.
If Walker plans to be a wayward station with these kind of guys, then NMSU could eventually become a force. I mean, how else can you sign the better recruits there?

Personally, I would rather see players that stay out of trouble get rewarded with the schollies. If you want to take a chance on someone then do it with someone like Ruffin, who needed a couple of classes before becoming eligible. Taking someone with a violent criminal past is asking for trouble, IMO. Teams need players they can count on both on/off the field.

Something tells me these guys aren't done making mistakes - we need charachter guys at this point in time -no. I see Steve's point, but side with Monty. I think that by that age your character is pretty well set. I know that mine was. I'm with Win and Monty on this one.

My wife and I had dinner with one of her female associates from the SF Bay Area who moved there for a job. She said she's going back to the Bay Area because she misses the diversity, and she's white. I highly doubt those guys who washed out playing for Hauck's teams hung around town, so to speak.

And they have no such concerns on head coaches with a past......See Rick N. and Dennis Erickson. Both wanted the Aztec job.
