I suppose this is a good thing, even though the designation is just code for, "SDSU might not suck as bad as most people think."

Hope springs eternal in the summer. And the prognosticators aren't stupid; they know they generate interest and therefore hits and subscription sales by geeking up that hope in every college football fan in the country, no matter how mediocre the teams may appear.

If there is going to be a big breakthrough by Aztec football, there will never be a better time than this coming season. 3-1 in non-conference is not guaranteed but at least more likely than not. Break even in the MWC after that and SDSU will be going to a bowl game for the first time in 12 years.
Is this all likely? No, not likely, but it's not an absurd idea. Several people have pointed to the AFA game as crucial. It would be the perfect Saturday to substantiate the predictions of the more optimistic among us.

With the second tier and third tier recruits that Long was bringing in, any win would have been a surprise. I am afraid that may still be the case.

Like Ryan Lindley and Vincent Brown, BJ Williams, Jerome Long, Andrew Preston, Logan Ketchem, Neil Spencer, Marcus Yarbourgh, Ernie Lawson, Alec Johnson, Nik Emberate, Brandon Sullivan, Miles Burris, Tommy Draheim, Ronnie Hillman, Juan Bolanos? And there are more that are pretty darn good players.

AzWm 3-1 OOC keeps coming up, and we seem to be thinking of beating Nicholls St. and the two WAC teams. How would you feel about the possible of agony of losing at NMSU in week 2, but then coming back to upset Missouri in week 3 and beating USU at home in week 4, still 3-1, but not how you drew it up?

Just my thoughts on that. If we beat Missouri, we should be 4-0. There is no way we should lose to Nicholls State, New Mexico State, or Utah State with this team and this staff.

In my contrarian nature, I am kinda getting more cautious on the season - it seems like we are everyone's "surprise" pick. Hell even just about everyone on the MWC board is picking us to make it to a bowl. I'd much rather see low expectations so as to sneak up on some teams.

And there are more that are pretty darn good players. Several of the guys you mention have or will be starting not because they've shown themselves to be "pretty darn good" but rather because the competition is so weak. And if you check Rivals, Steve, you will see that in both 2007 and 2008, Chuck's staff signed three recruits who were completely useless in the sense they never suited up or, as in one case, the player did suit up his first year but just complained through his cousin on this board about not starting and then thankfully quit since he looked absolutely clueless the couple times I saw him substituted in. I'm not trying to say those two classes were awful, but they were definitely sub-par overall. Probably about a 3 on a 10 scale of what SDSU is capable of achieving.

I'm leaning toward predicting a loss to NMSU, so if that happens then I'd take a Missou win as a consolation prize. Still, although I'd love for us to beat Missouri, if we lose to any of those other three teams I'll start drawing conclusions about this staff and it's ability to put into effect all the words it has used. Let's hope this doesn't happen. I have been so damned depressed that I have not looked at the talent on this program for over two years now. I just remember that Long was bringing in SLOW but big linemen. The game is always won or lost in line play. Everybody has fast running kids who can play behind the linemen, but you have got to have the linemen first. If some of those Long linemen grow a pair while they are growing into their bodies, we might have some good line play. I see that we are bringing in a typical 300 pound Samoan or Tongan from JC. If we have a couple of 'em, we might play some good football. Get three or four more, and we could beat Utah and TCU in the same season. Let's see what we got before the first coin flip.

The media is calling us out.
We need to deliver or disappoint (like the other teams before this one).
