spreadreport.com/2010-san-diego-state-aztecs-football-preview/"The offense ranked 30th in the nation last year and should be good again. Ryan Lindley returning for his junior season and is one of the best QBs in the Mountain West. The offensive line returns four starters from a season ago, while wide receivers Vincent Brown and DeMarco Sampson are one of the conference’s best duos. Lindley threw for 3,054 yards and 23 touchdowns as a sophomore, his second season as a starter. He did throw too many picks (16). SDSU averaged only 78.3 rushing yards per game, among the worst in the nation." I find it VERY interesting that we were ranked 30th in offense with one of the worst running games. That shows just how strong our passing game was last year, and how much stronger our entire offense will be this year with an even better passing offense, complimented by a better running game. www.collegesports-fans.com/football-previews/2010-preview/san-diego-state-aztecs.htmlOUTLOOK "There were some growing pains for the Aztecs last year in Brady Hoke’s first season, but there were also a lot of positive signs as the campaign wore down. This year, San Diego State has one of the league’s best quarterbacks, a great set of receivers and an extremely good defensive coordinator. Furthermore, they’re strong along the line of scrimmage and should do a much better job of protecting the football. Considering that the Aztecs finished a league-worst minus 10 in turnovers last year, this looks like a squad ripe for a turnaround. I believe that the bowl drought ends this season for San Diego State thanks to an improved team across the board and a relatively easy schedule. PREDICTED RESULT: 7-5 (4-4 Mountain West)" I love the bowl prediction. This cat predicts one more win than I do for this upcoming season. Good to be getting some respect.

And I say 6-6 but am keeping my fingers crossed in hopes that Hoke and his impressive staff are as good as we think they are. In that case, 7 wins might happen.
I know it's a long time ago, but look what Coryell did in his first year on the Mesa. In 1960, Paul Governali's last team finished 1-6-1. In 1961, the Aztecs under St. Don finished 7-2-1. The next year they upset the reigning power, Fresno St., in the famous Fog Bowl and won the conference championship.
Can it happen again?

The bowl prediction sounds feasible assuming nothing catastrophic happens.
Like injury to a crucial starting player or a major team meltdown.

The only problem here is Wisconsin was 30th in total offense last year. SDSU was 86th. Oops.
We were 30th in passing offense. That's pretty good.
I still think 7-5 is our high point in 2010.

Still, our passing game being 30th is still pretty decent. Of course our running game HAS to get better in a big way if we are going to go 7-5. In my opinion that is on the O-Line. I think we have the horses in the barn to churn some yards if the holes open up for them. Lindley and company will keep the defense honest from creeping up on the run, so the secondary should have some running room if we can spring the backs out of the backfield.

While wins and losses are important I just hope we improve as a football team. Last year was a great start under the new staff. Play better, consistent football and wins will be the result. If we win 6 games but look like hell doing it what have we really gained?

I'll be interested in seeing how teams defense us this year. Last season Sampson and Brown never were going strong at the same time, so defenses only had to prepare for one dominant receiver and were able to play closer to the line. This year, I expect defenses to try and stop the pass first and stop the run with less than 8 in the box. It's usually thought that a good running game sets up the passing game but the reverse is also true. The Chargers of the early 80's used the pass to set up the run, I hope we do the same thing this year.

The question has to be asked: can they go-off at the same time? If they can, we'll be hard to stop On 4th down they will both go off. Lindley needs to force the defense to double cover both wide receivers. When that is done, enough "other stuff" will be open to move the ball. Hopefully that is the Aztecs offensive plan for the year.

However, if everthing goes well six wins might happen as it very nearly did last year.
