There is speculation to that effect. I'm linking to a SJSU fan board that raises this issue. Please read first the Hawaii fishwrap article that seems to have started all this; it's linked in the Spartan thread. Read the comments, both on the newspaper article and then the Spartan board. Interesting to see what others say about us. spartanblitz.com/index.php?/topic/202-is-the-wac-looking-to-add-a-former-member/AzWm

One thing that nobody on the Spartan board mentions is that SDSU is not the only stakeholder with an interest is retaining a football stadium in San Diego. It's conceivable that the Holiday Bowl people are even more influential in this argument than is SDSU.

SJSU Football. Can you say depressing? www.spartanthunder.com/(Hell, it depresses ME and I'm nothing more than a former Bay Area resident.) Yeah, it's depressing like when I saw them at Spartan Stadium kicking our asses the last couple of times we played them. There was about 15K attendance for each game, but consider this. Unless the new contract terms are different, we begin to make money at the Q after 20K attendance since we don't own it. SJSU still makes money with their piddly attendance since Spartan Stadium is theirs.

Well, on a scale of 1-10, their head coach in those games rated about a 7 considering what he accomplished there, at the U of A and at Hawaii before that. Ours rated about a 1. And does anybody else wonder if (1) SDSU not been invited to join the MWC at the eleventh hour and (2) Steve Fisher hadn't called Rick Bay after Rick Majerus turned him down that today, we would be exactly where they are?

Dick Tomey would have been a good stop gap hire - he has experience doing pretty decent with mediocre programs.
San Jose State is in trouble and one must wonder how much longer they will survive.
Sad that 30 plus million people and 31 or 32 public (mostly pretty large) universites and soon 4 or 5 if SLO moves up will be 1a.

We had no money at the time but Tomey was out of work and a few years later went to SJSU for ~2/3 what Craft was paid. It's one thing not to have gotten Tedford. Quite understandable, actually. However, to have courted an under-contract Chargers coach without getting permission and then to have passed on Tomey for Craft was beyond mere stupidity. I think SJSU football is history unless this young guy they've hired performs a miracle.

I am positive the WAC would welcome us back.

Hell yes they would take us in a heartbeat. With the loss of Boise State, they have become the Sunbelt Conference West, and even as lousy as we have been in FB when you look at our overall athletic program and the academic profile of the school we would be a welcome addition to the WAC.
Now would we want to take a step back? I certainly hope not.

WAC? Who cares? Yeah, I know--obviously guys care otherwise there would not be a thread on the subject. But, talk about a way to get me entirely disinterested in Aztec Athletics and that would have to be about at the top of the list. I cannot imagine a more negative thing to happen then ending up in the WAC. The Fred Noonan School of Navigation.

I’m sure the WAC is salivating with the idea of welcoming us back BUT I don’t see an iota of good sense how returning to that league would benefit us. Some Aztec fans have argued that if we go back to the WAC, we have a higher probability of being where Boise St. is now. However, what these WAC advocates fail to realize is that by returning to the WAC, we’d be giving up the advantages we currently enjoy in a higher profile conference. It took years for the MWC brand to establish itself and IMO, it has finally distanced itself from the confusion with the WAC especially during and after the recent realignments – our league and teams were often mentioned.
Moreover, with less revenue to work with by being in the WAC, we certainly will lose some of our top coaches since it’ll be harder for us to retain their services and afford their salaries.

Furthermore, why didn’t Kansas, Missouri, K-State, Iowa St. and Baylor just say “screw Texas/Oklahoma and the BigXII” and merge with MWC since they’ll probably never win a league title with these two football giants dominating their conference.

They make more money where they're at. Are we not in a similar position? We make $1.2 million in MWC. How much do WAC teams get – 250k?

Are we not in a similar position? We make $1.2 million in MWC. How much do WAC teams get – 250k? So we'll lose a million dollars a year if we go to the WAC? Vandy would probably lose ten million (maybe more) if they left the SEC. I'm not necessarily saying we belong in the WAC, but after 32 years of this shouldn't we be finally asking ourselves, "Is this really any fun?" And here I thought the MWC has only been around for a decade...

And here I thought the MWC has only been around for a decade... The league we're in now is what the WAC was 32 years ago. The main change was one of semantics. The point is, we've been playing these schools for a long time. Let me get this straight. You want us to take less money and pay more for travel costs to get more wins against s#!++y teams to get into the same situation Boise is in...in the MWC?

A, $1.2M is just the TV revenue and not the bowl and and basketball revenue as well. So the impact would be severe.
B, why aim low?

Today's MWC is yesterday's WAC. Today's WAC is yesterday's PCAA. So what you’re implying is that we should go back to the yesteryears because we couldn’t face the challenges of the present. Whilst every WAC school would jump forward to the MWC in a heartbeat, you prefer that we jump backward.
