Well, my HiTekRadio badge did not get me into the game free, but it did get me a spot in the press box. Oh, yes, one more thing. The Charger Girls performed at halftime and had to come into the pressbox (not too large a one) afterward to get their bags. This gave me a chance to get close up (though not too personal) to all those beauties. There are perks to be enjoyed by a media personality after all! ;D
As for the game, the North won, 27-3. Several players listed as headed for SDSU in the game program are not among those granted scholarships for the coming year (http://goaztecs.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/2010-Signing-Day.html). (Keep in mind that if I did not see a player that does not mean he was not there. . . time to get my eyes checked, maybe. ) Those were Mahbu Keels (Mission Bay), Matthew Cellery (Eastlake), and Nick Heath (Madison). I spotted Keels on the field, as well as Heath. Heath started and played a lot of DL. He had one tackle for loss. I don't remember seeing Cellery. Nor did I see David Lamar (Madison, WR) who is one of the scholarship newcomers.
(D'Angelo Barksdale, Eastlake, was the starting South QB. He was listed in the roster as headed for SDSU, but in the Photo section of the program it said that he was going to USD. I assume the latter is correct.)
For the North, Kenny Galea'i, a scholarship recruit DL from Oceanside was announced but I did not see him on the field or off.
The last player I will mention was definitely in evidence. I refer to Jake Fely, LB from Oceanside. He was very active, with a couple of deflected passes in the first half and at least two tackles for losses in the 2nd half. You will find an audio interview I did with him at
www.hitekradio.com/interviews.htm.
He even had one carry for about three yards. On the negative side he had a false start when lined up as RB. That cost the North 5 yards, but he got most of that back on his subsequent carry. I think we will see him at LB at State. Jake is only 5-10, which may or may not handicap him at OLB.
By the way, Jake would have gotten my vote for Defensive Player of the Game. Another player got that honor. The announcer said that the vote on that award was close; I'll wager that Jake was the other player considered.
I must add another positive note regarding Jake. After the two teams lined up to shake hands with each other I called out to him to arrange the interview. Here is how the conversation went . . .
AztecWilliam: "Hey, Jake!"
JaKe: "Yes sir?"
Notice his reply. Not, "Whassup?" or "Yeah?" or "Who are you", but instead "Yes sir." Trust me when I say that too few students I encounter while teaching are similarly respectful. Sure, I'm an old geezer to an 18 year old (or perhaps to a 38 year old ). Still, I like the attitude.
If you have any trouble playing the interview, PM me.

PS: Troy Ware, WR from Vista, played well, He's going to BSU in the Fall. Another Vista Panther, Ian Richardson, a SS, also contributed. He will join the Torreros.
