Just a reminder (which will go over like a lead baloon ).Chuck Long said before his 3rd year, that in year 4 and 5 the defense would be very good (of course that was in his system).
The reasons he stated were the development of young players that were forced to play as true freshman. Among the ones he talked about (this was on 1090 radio interview I heard)...
-Jerome Long
-BJ Williams
-Miles Burris
-Marcus Yarbourough
-Logan Ketchum
-Neil Spencer
-Ernie Lawson
-BJ Williams
Will the D be better this year (even though with a strategy change?)...
Of course it will. They have depth and experience with Chuck Longs recruits.
No surprise to me. Many of you can hide your head in the sand if you want to. I refuse too.
Nevermind the fact that Long's defensive scheme and abilities as a DC are VASTLY superior to Elliott's.
I hope they are.....but am not convinced yet.
I do like Rockys game plan with the 3-3-5. It is made for the underdog.
It is very exciting and a scheme that can work here with the right personal. The problem is that when we let Chuck Long go (and Bob Elliot) that the defensive philosophy changed, therefore the recruiting started all over for defensive players that fit Rockys system.
Rocky is playing with most players on D that weren't recruited for his system. This is part of what I mentioned when Chuck Long was let go....that it would "delay" progress. Because the players that were here were for one system and not the new system being brought in.
Luckily Chuck Longs players are good enough and NOW experienced enough that they can be effective in Rocky's system.
We are still delayed because of the change with firing Chuck Long and Bob Elliot for 2 more years.
It will take that long (no pun intended) for Rocky to get his players in place.
Don't take my comments wrong. I like Rocky Long and I think he will get the defense where we all want it in two years.
And just for the record......I think Rocky Long will be the head coach of the Aztecs in 2-3 years. I feel it is a 50/50 chance.
