If all they were doing was using these paramilitary units to go after dangerous drug criminals that would be fine. The fact is, 70 and Balko are right. They are using these units to serve warrants on non-violent types and too often are using excessive and lethal force in doing so. This crap needs to stop. I don't want a bunch of marginally endowed Yahoos running around with assault rifles under the color of authority and without adult supervision.

I agree that serving a warrant for a traffic ticket or the like is not what we want. I think we should also be getting the Border Patrol better armed. |

In theory, a well trained SWAT team is less likely to shoot the wrong guy or shoot at all. Aside from the team being better armed they are also better trained in the use of those arms and the tactics that go along with them. Are mistakes made? Of course. But on the whole, the proper use of a SWAT team is much better than sending in "regular" police who are untrained for those types of operations.

However, the article I posted had the headline about police tanks. Your comment was that police should be "armed at least as well as the drug gangs". Might be worth serious consideration. It should at least be given a shot, on a state by state basis. It doesn't mean it'll need to be legalized everywhere. I don't see why the states couldn't decide what was best for them. If it doesn't work the state can always make it illegal again. |

I think taking the profit motive out of drugs is an experiment worth looking at. We sure spend a lot of time and effort spinning our wheels now. I have some rather harsh ideas about how to treat habitual drug users legal or not, but that is a different discussion. |
