I have added Eugene Emeralds to my Padres Minor League Players spreadsheet. How players were Acquired15 2011 Draft 07 Foreign Free Agent 05 2010 Draft 01 2009 Draft (Tate) The youngest player is 6th round pick from 2010 John Barbato. He will turn 19 on July 11. The Padres signed him for $1.4 million. That is first round top 20 money. Most teams passed because they thought he would not sign but go to college instead.

Shaky first start for Barbato. Nerves might have played an issue. Spangenberg logged his first career hit. RBI double in the 9th last night. Tate is struggling early, don't put too much stock into it....yet.

Also hitting .500 is 2nd Lieutenant Clint Moore. He is active in the Army but given time to play baseball. He was the Padres 31st round pick. He is a great fielding SS. When I was in the Marine Corps a knew a Marine Olympian who was given a lot of time off to train for his sport, bobsledding.

Tate went 5 for 6 today with 2 doubles and a triple. Spangenberg had 5 RBI's including his first professional homer. Emeralds are now 8-2 on the year. And after Tate's two singles, he stole second base both times. One of his 5 tools, speed, has him 5-1 in SBA.

I guess he won't be stealing any bases anytime soon.

I guess he won't be stealing any bases anytime soon. It really sucks. You never how how things would have worked out but if he didn't have that injury, he probably wouldn't have had time to screw up his life some more. He probably will start next year back at Fort Wayne, again. Meanwhile another highly rated CF in the Padres system, who is 5 months younger and two levels higher is having a very good season. Reymond Fuentes, who we got in the AGon trade (2008 first round pick), is at Lake Elsinore. One thing the Padres wanted him to do is draw more walks to take advantage of his very good speed. The Padres use to want players to at least have 10% as many walks as AB. He has 287 AB and 26 walks. That is a big improvement over last year. He has 34 steals being caught 9 times. He was rated by Baseball America as the 3rd fastest runner in the 2009 draft eligible high school players. He is a plus fielding, leadoff type CF.
