Personally, I don't think that this one issue will hurt him too much in the primaries. There are so many litmus tests on the conservative side, that pretty much all the candidates will fail at least one of them -- either by not believing or by not working hard enough in support.

And as a moderate, I would be much more inclined to vote for a conservative in the general election who will stand up to the right on occasion than one who marches in lockstep with the more extreme elements.

I think his flirtation of having Texas secede from the Union might be a speed bump. His growing unpopularity in Texas might be a problem too.
