All teams (if they had a choice) would like to play all BIG out of conf. games at home.
No team wants to play all of their big out of conf. games on the road.
So when we are negotiating with an opponent about a game, we want them here......they want us at their place.
The way to get around this is to schedule a home and home with the opossing team. Sort of like meeting them in the middle of the negotiations. Meaning that we will play them at their place, IF they will come to our place the following season.
This type of scheduling only pertains to out of conf. games. In conf., you play a home and home with every team on your schedule.
I hope I didn't just confuse you more. There is quite a lot more to it, but that is the basics.

Unfortunately, the big boys often play the game in their home and then buy their way out of the game here. Because we allow them to. Or at least Bay allowed Ohio St. to buy their way out of the game in 2005, which then got moved to C-bus. Yeah, we needed the money but the better way to have done it would have been to do what Wyoming did last year with Texas. That is, rather than selling the game back to Austin, they made purchasing a season ticket the only way you could get a seat for Texas. Assuming we can get one of the true big boys to agree to a 2 for 1 like UT did with Wyoming, we should do the same. (Typical of Wyoming's athletic department to handle something like that better than SDSU. It's why despite all we have going for us compared to them, their football program is better than ours.)

Another thing to consider is guarantee games - that is where teams pay an opponent (top programs pay around 75k) for an opponent to come in as a one-off game, these are often body bag games where you pay someone to travel and get beat. There are also 2 for 1s (seems like more of these in football, WYO seems to sign a bunch of these) where one team gets 2 home games, the other 1 home game.
