Jedd Gyorko is 3rd in the Cal League in OPS, SLG, and BA. Cal League Players above 1.000 OPS First | Last | Age | OPS | Eric | Campbell | 25 | 1.219 | Mike | Zuanich | 24 | 1.196 | Jedd | Gyorko | 22 | 1.154 | Adam | Eaton | 22 | 1.054 | Kody | Hinze | 23 | 1.033 | Gorman | Erickson | 23 | 1.02 |
Notice the ages. The two players above him both are too old for "A+". Recently Jedd has been on fire. Last 10 games: .465 .510 .953 1.464 He has had multiple hits in 7 of the last 10 games. He has had extra base hits in 7 of the last 10 games. He is first in the league in doubles - 20. He is 2nd in the league in home runs - 10. He leads the league in RBIs - 42. He was the Padres 2nd round pick in 2010 from West Virginia University Paul DePodesta comments on his blog during the draft. We got ourselves a bat.
Jedd is a junior shortstop from West Virginia University who has done nothing but rake for three years. At 5'10" and 195lbs, Jedd is a strong infielder with right-handed power. This year he had 48 extra base hits in just 236 at-bats while only striking out just 24 times. Furthermore, last summer he hit .326/.386/.488 with a wood bat in the Cape Cod League.
A driven, hard-nosed player, Jedd is the type of grinder with the makeup to will himself to the Major Leagues. We were hoping all night that he might still be there when we picked today, as we feel he's one of the more polished bats in the draft.

Maybe he's a A+ PROSPECT but nothing more until he proves himself in the bigs.

Maybe you're joking around with, Bill, and you can tell me to butt out, my interpretation of A+ is high A ball, ie Lake Elsinore which is high A, versus Ft Wayne which is low A ball.

Pretty sure that's what he was referring to. Gyorko is hitting just south of .400 right now and it's a matter of time before he's in San Antonio. He's too good for the Cal League.

If that is what Statboy meant then I missed it. I'm sure he'll clarify soon. thx Sorry for any confusion. "A+" is common shorthand for High Minor League "A" ball. I would think the following stentence in the first post would have clarified if you had a question: " The two players above him both are too old for "A+". " Here is my Padres minor league rosters using "A+" as the designation for LE.

Pretty sure that's what he was referring to. Gyorko is hitting just south of .400 right now and it's a matter of time before he's in San Antonio. He's too good for the Cal League. Baseball America just said the same thing. BA named Jedd #1 in their weekly Hot Sheet. Gyorko is slated for progression—as in to Double-A. With third baseman James Darnell enjoying similar success in Double-A, the Padres could see fit to promote he and Gyorko at the same time. The same link also had nice things to say about SS Beamer Weems. Perhaps he'd be easier to ignore if he went by his given name of William instead of Beamer. But as is Beamer Weems stands as the finest defensive infielder in the Padres system, and his hot streak with the stick is becoming harder to ignore with each successful week. The pure shortstop now may profile as a big league utility man instead of org player. The 23-year-old Weems enjoyed a big week with Double-A San Antonio, going 9-for-22 (.409) with two homers, two doubles, six RBIs and a six-to-three walk-to-whiff ratio. That kind of production is difficult to reconcile with his past output. Weams entered the year as a career .229 hitter with three career homers. He's already gone deep four times this year while batting .312/.404/.504

Gyorko is too old for A+ ball as well. There are two A+ Leagues. 22 is old for the other A+ League but not the Cal Leauge.

Gyorko is too old for A+ ball as well. There are two A+ Leagues. 22 is old for the other A+ League but not the Cal Leauge. Average age of the California league is 23.4 years old. Gyorko is 22.7. San Jose has 8 players (of 30) younger than Gyorko. Rancho Cucamonga has 10 players (of 33) younger than Gyorko. Stockton has 6 players (of 31) younger than Gyorko. Bakersfield has 9 players (of 30) younger than Gyorko. Inland Empire has 6 players (of 31) younger than Gyorko. High Desert has 10 players (of 28) younger than Gyorko. Visalia has 13 players (of 26) younger than Gyorko. Medesto has 8 players (of 28) younger than Gyorko. Lancaster has 12 players (of 29) younger than Gyorko. Just 82 of the 300 players in the Cal leage are younger than Gyorko. Team | Avg Age | Visalia | 22.7 | Lancaster | 23.1 | High Desert | 23.2 | Lake Elsinore | 23.4 | Stockton | 23.5 | Bakersfield | 23.5 | Rancho Cucamonga | 23.6 | San Jose | 23.7 | Medesto | 23.8 | Inland Empire | 23.8 | Average | 23.4 |

He's killing it. Hope he avoids being Antonelli 2.0 where he kills it in A+ one year and then forgets how to swing the next.

Gyorko's team, Lake Elsinore, started the year in last place at 20-30 but have since won 17 and lost 8. They are now the wild card leader (2.0 games) and the second half leader (2.0 games).

Gyorko promoted to "AA". That sucks, I was planning to go see Lake Elsinore. But on a less selfish note:
3B Darnell, RP Brach to Tucson. 3B Gyorko, RP Mikolas to San Antonio.
Darnell hit a Double & 2 Singles in his first game at "AAA". 3-5 = .600. Darnell is going to rock in "AAA". It is a big hitting league. Blanks is hitting .410

They were just waiting for the respective league All Star games to conclude in order to promote them both at the same time. Brad Brach just might be the future closer here in San Diego.

Gyorko was 2-4 with a double in his first game at San Antonio. Mikolas came in and pitched a scoreless inning to get the win.
