"S" stands for "State" Prior to 1946, San Diego State was the only State school in Southern California. UCLA was a UC, Santa Barbara was always known as Santa Barbara and became "Santa Barbara College" in 1942. -
The varsity letter was a "S". Cheer outfits had the "S"

Scarosso... Chinanco has not been the same since they rebuilt the Still (after the fire) and added a sweetener. 1) Don Fulano Reposado 2) Pulque Frio 3) Herradura Reposado 4) Herradura Anejo Try that- then bring some Sangrita and we will talk!

It was much easier to see in 1989, thanks to a fire on Cowles Mtn that burned all of the brush away from the area the previous September.

Back in the day, we all walked to and from school. My walk home featured a dead on view of "S" Mountain. It was just "S" Mountain to us. Well, pretty much any kid who ever walked home west to east back then had that view. It wasn't until decades later that I learned the mountain's real name.
Fast forward, and today I live in the shadow of that mountain in San Carlos!

I bow to your vast knowledge of the devil's drink, and truthfully will admit I swore off any and all tequila after a couple of rough nights long ago. Not that I haven't still occasional enjoyed a single shot here and there.

The "S" on the mountain in San Diego was a big thing back, way before my time. It would explain why my mother in law was always lost whenever she would drive in San Diego proper. She thought the S was a directional indicator. Oh. No. Mother-in-law-dearest. HAM

Yeah, and Aztecbruce can show up in his classic Monty, and you both can re-surrect and return us to the real mascot, Montyzuma. I will be selling Zuma lighters to help raise money for parents of college age children. HAM

If I'm not mistaken, in recent years Dr. Jannsen, my old Political Theory prof, was the lead guy. I think he died about 10 years ago Dr. Jannsen is still alive. Yes he is and he was the most difficult prof I had in grad school, Tai Jin Kahn not withstanding. And BTW, TLG told me he was one of the more difficult profs he had back in the early '50s. What made Henry difficult for me was in the '70s he stated at our first seminar that he didn't know what he believed in. He started out a a petroleum geology major and was convinced by a roommate that he could make more of a difference in poli sci. So in his seminar we read a lot of things that didn't seem to connect at the start but made sense at the end. One of the most influential profs I had because he didn't expect us to do anything by rote, he demanded we thought and he demanded we should convince him what he should believe in. =Bob

Here's the thing - Cowles Mt. is one of the few remaining populations of coastal sage scrub within the City and as such, it's become rather important. If more CSS remained, it wouldn't be such a problem to put the "S" on that hill, but it's long past time that could be done.
The simple fact is this -we need to leave some land for native species no matter how little some people think of them and if more open space had been preserved years ago, the "S" could have been there. And even more to the point, if someone had bothered to do an environmental document stating why the "S" did not create any sort of environmental impacts, the "S" would most certainly be there.

Escondido HS has a big "E" on the side of a hill. That's a HS.
The fact that there is no "S" on Cowles Mt. shows me that something is missing at SDSU. Call it lack of overall school pride or perhaps a weakness of leadership, which "bows a knee" to some environmental kook who claims it will upset the delicate eco system of the regional foothills.
How about a nice big Red "S" permanently etched on the side of the MTN?

If Cowles Mtn was directly adjacent to campus, I'd see your point. But it's not even close, and in truth, is not even visible from a good percentage of the campus. And Viejas Arena has this thing called a wall and a roof blocking your view of the mountain, so I'd say let's not. Remember, we have a big jumbotron out front now reminding one and all to look over at our campus. BTW, my kids keep asking me why all the bands playing on campus have "OAT" in their name. e.g. Tenacious D OAT July 29th .....was up there yesterday.

Call it lack of overall school pride or perhaps a weakness of leadership, which "bows a knee" to some environmental kook who claims it will upset the delicate eco system of the regional foothills. Whatever resistance that any "environmental kooks" would pale in comparison to just about every homeowner from Grantville to La Mesa who would fight (and rightfully so) the visual blight. If there was a hill on campus that the university acutally owned, I could maybe (and that's a strecth) see some sort of letter going up on it. It's just not going to happen on Cowles ever again. People need not forget, but they need to move on. Painted rocks might have been cool 50 years ago but now most people assoicate them with trailer parks and truck stops along I-40.

Your argument is that you want a university to lower itself to high school behavior. Step your game up!

Ok, the fact that SDSU doesn't own Cowles Mtn is a valid point, plus you can barely see it from the Q.

Was being facetious. However, I was really asked that by my 8 year old.
