I thought Obama's announcement of the killing of bin Laden was just right; well said with appropriate kudos to all those who made the operation a success. His nod to George Bush was also welcome.
The President is to be congratulated, as are the many Americans who have worked so hard to bring the bastard to justice.

The "shrub" couldn't, or wouldn't get him, it's a great day to be an AMERICAN!

1) The "shrub" couldn't, or wouldn't get him, 2) it's a great day to be an AMERICAN! 1) 2) And that's all any of us should be saying right now.

Obama made no "nod" to bush in the form of having acknowledged all of bush's hard work on this front for his entire presidency. He used ONE accomodating phrase used by bush in order to ingratiate himself to the nation's few remaining terrorism hawks. Politically, this is absolutely terrible news for the right wing---an avowed pacifist capturing the "war president's" number one target and therefore becoming (wrongly) perceived as THE MAN WHO KILLED the Islamic terrorists' most renowned symbol. Obama won the lottery tonight. Of course, bush's failure to get the guy for seven years is inexcusable. Obama should be thanking bush for handing him the 2012 election. Not so fast. He took credit for it in his speech but they did little more than authorize the mission and resource it. The nod goes elswhere in the intelligence community and DoD Coutherterror planners and operators. He gets credit for it happening on his watch but that is far from "capturing" OBL, that was done in other buildings. The same people who got him yesterday are essentially the same people trying to do it under Bush. Let that be clear. The credit doesn't go to the politicians, it goes to the professionals.

That is a slap right across the face of many who put their lives on the line going after him. There was no difference between how Bush did it and Obama. Let's be happy it happened and give credit where it really belongs, the IC and the CT forces.

The President did a fantastic job in his speech last nite.
I think it is sad there are those who will attempt to politicize this event when it should bring all Americans together.

I think it is sad there are those who will attempt to politicize this event when it should bring all Americans together. That would include the guy who on half the White House crowd shots on CNN was vigorously waiving the Bush/Cheney campaign sign.

The president didn't find nor capture him, the professionals did. I credited the President because it happened on his watch. I don't want those that deserve the real credit to get lost in this hype. My comments were apolitical, unlike yours!

Your response that all the President did was "authorize the mission and resource it" was weak praise at best. That is political. Stu, I have read your posts for more than ten years. "Seldom" would be the definition of how often you post an apolitical post on the political board.

Yep. Obama should and will take credit for the capture and killing of UBL. I recall when GHWB was riding at about 90% approval after kicking the Iraqis out of Kuwait. Bi-partisan support is correct and traditional when it comes to the successes of the American military. $100 tanks of gas and a crushing debt, among other things, will be Obama's undoing, just as "its the economy, stupid" ruined the fortunes of Kuwait's liberator.

A genuine attempt to credit Obama, the CIA, and the Seal Team along with all the other support that went into this great moment turns into mud slinging.
Sad!

Well, congratulations to everyone involved, up to and including the President. Even though bin Laden has been somewhat irrelevant for the past few years, it's a great moral victory and a well-deserved end to a monster. I hope the troops were able to recover a lot of intel from the site that will lead to the eradication of many more of these monsters.
And no, I don't believe that it was a case of putting our troops at risk for a publicity stunt, as it probably would have been characterized by the left had the President been of the other party.
As for those who claim this means the 2012 election is a foregone conclusion - tell it to Bush 41 with his 90% approvals a year and a half out from an election right after Desert Storm.
I'm not making any predictions, but those who would make them based on this event should hold their water and come back in about a year. The economy can be a real killer for incumbents.

Obama did the right thing, the people who carried out the mission did a great job, and the country rejoices. That's the story. No need to make more of it than that since what it is is plenty.
As for Bush, he, too, wanted to get OBL and tasked his people to do just that. The fact that the goal was achieved during Obama's term means simply that it is very difficult to locate a man who is well aware that the world's only super power is really eager to kill him and who, in addition, was hiding in a far-off country where many of the inhabitants are sympathetic to his radical beliefs.
Obama will rise or fall in the 2012 election for reasons mostly unrelated to the death of OBL.

Looks like he's been getting plenty of help from our supposed allies in Pakistan.

Time to say that we killed who invaded Afghanistan to kill and leave them to their medieval ways. =Bob The problem, however, is not just al Qaeda. It is also the Taliban, who gave Bin Laden a safe haven in which to plan his atrocities. If we leave and the Taliban take over again, what is to prevent them from putting up the " Vacancy-terrorists welcome" sign? Does anyone think that the Taliban are any less hostile to the U.S. or any less friendly to al Qaeda than they were before we invaded? The reverse is probably true. Furthermore, once having left, the Taliban would probably conclude - with reason - that a new American invasion is just this side of unthinkable. They would, in other words, feel safe in giving vent to their most cherished goals. In addition to enslaving women, those goals would almost certainly include poking a sharp stick in Uncle Sam's eye if at all possible. Don't misunderstand. I am not saying that we should stay in Afghanistan for the next ten or twenty years. I am saying that a quick exit from Afghanistan does not mean that a threat to our interests will never again originate from that country. We are dealing in an area in which every single policy we choose carries a big risk. AzWm

If his initial policies as a Senator and his Presidential campaign (close Gitmo, no enhanced questioning techniques (he even had legal inquires against Bush admin lawyers who authorized such), allowing the detainees to lawyer up in US court, etc, were in vogue since 2001, we may very well have never obtained the leads that led to the ultimate killing of UBL. Its not lost on me that Gitmo remains open, the NY civilian trial of the terrorist was nearly a disaster and he has abandoned that approach, he didn't tell Pakistan what we were up to (Thanks to Bill C. for that lesson learned), etc. Bush/Chenney are somewhat vindicated and are not the Fascist ogres that some make them out to be. Just adults who thought through the problems & realities of national security.
