A Monday. Figures. I would have liked to be able to go, but both my sick and vacation days are running low.
I'm sure this will be quite an event - a celebration of a great man who also happened to be a great coach. He deserves a great turnout.

It's fitting that his service be held on the site of where the Coryell legacy really started: Aztec Bowl. While the NFL, and previously the Chargers, have been late to truly appreciate all of his contributions, the Aztec community -- and college football -- have always been appreciative of what he brought to State. To me, he will always be an Aztec first and a Charger second.
He is a charter member of the Aztec HOF, and has been a member of the College Football HOF for years.

It seemed that the Chargers sort of hijacked it a bit; I would guess his kids had a lot to do with making sure the only memorial happened at Viejas aztec Bowl and a great gesture putting out the DC Endowement as the donation spot. Fouts always seemed like a good guy, and seemed to make a concerted effort to note his many accomplishments at State - I would also guess much of that came from the man's mouth.

Can one of the mods sticky this to the top?
The memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. at Viejas Arena. A school spokesman says the Coryell family has indicated this will be the only service.

Aztecs,
Legendary San Diego State and San Diego Charger Head Football Coach Don Coryell passed on Thursday, July 1st. A public memorial service celebrating the life of Don Coryell will be held on Monday, July 12, at San Diego State University’s Viejas Arena at Aztec Bowl, beginning at 2 p.m. PT. The Coryell family has indicated that this will be the only service.
The doors to Viejas Arena will open at 1 p.m. and all fans and friends are encouraged to attend.
In lieu of flowers, the Coryell family asks for contributions to: The Don Coryell Scholarship Fund, in care of The Campanile Foundation, 5500 Campanile Drive, San Diego, CA 92182-4313.
Additional details on the service will be made available when plans are finalized.
Please show you support for Coach Coryell and his family by attending this service. Please spread the word. Thank you so very much.
Hang in there, Matt

This is all about respect for the man who created the Aztec Football program and Chargers winning ways. NO EXCUSES. If you live in San Diego or near San Diego, take the damn day off and show up to pay your respect to Coach Coryell's family. I'm busy as heck but it's on the calendar and I'll be there in GEAR! Don't weenie out like 99% of you probably will. JUST DO IT! The man deserves your time off from work, babysitting or whatever your made up excuse would be.

His family, etc., had me in tears. By the time Joe Gibbs was done I was ready to turn the thing off and walk away in anger. This is about Don Coryell not Gibbs particular religious beliefs.

He needs to review his Ecclesiastes about there being a time and place ... I can't even remember what he had to say about his dear departed friend.

But of course I grew with very strong religious beliefs and believe in God. As do most (but not all). If he had a point to make about The Great Don Coryell, it was completely lost in his sermon.

So the services are about 2-3 hours.
You guys let a guy talking for 10 minutes about God divert you from what today is all about?

All it did was divert me from what Joe Gibbs had to say about Don Coryell. I'll remember what John Madden had to say, what Dan Fouts had to say, what Fred Dryer had to say ...
