The city of San Diego lost a great person and great coach today. Don Coryell will forever be known as the head coach of head coaches.
I met Don when I was only 17 years old. I was attending an afternoon Padre game at the Murph. My friend and I stayed afterwards to get Padre autographs. Fortunately for us, the Chargers were practicing across the parking lot. So instead of just getting the Padres, we got over 30 Charger autographs including Fouts, Winslow, and Muncie. Half way through getting the autographs my pen stopped working. Who do you think gave me his pen? Of course - Don Coryell. I still have that pen today along with the signatures.
As a SDSU grad and football fan, I saw Don at several games. For some reason, I guess out of respect, I never bothered him. I would just tell my friend who was originally from out of town - one of the greatest coaches of all time is standing right next to us.
The only regret I have is I did see Don going into the Marriott in Carmel Valley (I work near by) about two years ago. I wanted to go up and tell him how special an impact the pen had.
As a San Diego football fan (both Chargers and Aztecs), there is no one more important than Don. God bless the Coryell family.

This is a great thread start that deserves a little more attention. Thank for sharing your story. I'm sure Coryell understands now, so feel no regret at all.

It's a real shame that he didn't get to see the turnaround of our program. A nice tribute would be putting his initials on the uniforms this year.

I came to San Diego after Don had become the Chargers head coach.
I loved his Chargers days, but always felt that I missed out on his Aztec days (which I did).
About 5 years ago he was walking around with his family on Plaza at an Aztec game at Qualcomm. I stopped and talked to him. He was fantastic.
My first thought was....This guy is a legend, he is sick, he needs help to walk, and he found the time to talk to me on the Plaza Level and was pleasant.
Class guy.

Saint Don just died. Look at his eyes at 1:24 and you will see where I learned intensity. I got to be around a great leader and a Man's man. I have seen him cry for his boys. If Don got angry grown men would cower. You trusted this man like no other. You would do what ever he asked out of respect. He would look after his guys for as long as he lived. You could take on any one no matter what the odds were. There was always hope. He got 110% out of everyone around him all the time. He was a small man with a lisp who was the biggest man I have ever met. He was never out worked or out coached. He worked on every detail. He hugged his guys and slapped pro football players on the butt. I have never heard him being second guest. No one held back. Money was never important to him. He was always out numbered, but it never effected his head. It was an honor to have had the opportunity to see a great man up close.

Wouldn't be great if the field at Qualcomm were named after Coach Coryell ? He was the master of the greatest moments ever played on that fiesd and was a great ambassador for our Aztecs and Chargers his whole life.

Jack Murphy helped get money and cars to keep us from losing Don to Wisconsin. When I came to SD Jack was a big time editor with same time sports teams. Jack did not look down on these teams, he helped build them up. When Don went to Heaven he was greeted by Jack Murphy!!!!
