Whilst several conservative voices in the US have urged Obama to use the situation to knock out a key Iranian ally, Israel could not think of anything worse. For Israel, it's the predictability of Assad that renders him the preferred option in Damascus.

As Israeli academic, Eyal Zisser, argued: “You know where you stand with him.”

Israel faces the threat of a multiplication of foes in the region should the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt emerge in future years as an active opponent to Israeli interests in the region. No longer will Israel be solely contending with Iran for regional supremacy, a likelihood that is keeping Israel’s hands out of the current Syrian turmoil.

Such a fear was reflected in US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s declaration of Assad as a “reformer”, a far cry from the crazy dictator analogy used to describe Colonel Gaddafi. The US has dismissed calls for military intervention in Syria, and like Israel, is eyeing the protests with great interest and anxiety.

Democracy does indeed come at a price. Perhaps too high of a price in Syria.

Maybe the President DOES know what he is doing.
