...against the O's, and I'm trying to remember what team had the pick in front of the Tigers in the draft that year, and who they took?

Back then Stauffer was a very, very good pick. Our medical staff blew that one. But, I would love to have Verlander leading our staff today.

He'd have been dealt for prospects an off-season or two ago. What was so dissapointing about the pick is you can't even chalk it up to hindsight. Everybody had Verlander, Drew, and Weaver as the top 3 guys....not neccesarily in that order. Weaver dropped to the Angels only because of signability issues in dealing with Boras. The Tigers snatched up Verlander at #2. Drew has had a decent career. Nothing great, but better than Khalil Greene and Everth Cabrera.

I don't know if you could compare the pick and it's impact in the same light as the Bolts drafting of Leaf, but it's close in my book. That pick set us back a lot. You just can't miss with the Number 1 pick in the draft.

Hey, don't give up on Matt Bush so quickly. He actually pitched about 10 innings for a couple of Tampa Bay minor league teams last year. He might actually make it to the bigs as a middle reliever sometime before his 30th birthday. What more can you expect from the #1 pick?

Depressing. But I'm not really disappointed in our pitching. It's been one of the best in baseball over the least 5 or 6 years.
What is depressing his how pathetic our offense is. It's probably been the worst over that same span.
I was talking to someone who works for the Padres who is pretty certain Morad and Co. Will sell the team in a few years. Let's hope Mark Cuban or Tom Clancy want to buy a team by then.
We have a good pitching staff, along with some good young arms in the minors. We have a GM that gets it. I think Hoyer is one of the best in the business. He gets it.
We just need some freaking bats. If we are even average offensively our pitching is good enough to have us in the post season half the time.
Hopefully that Rizzo kid turns into a stud. Blah dighodishgds

Just a comparison of Padres leaders in wins and Verlander over the years.

Blah dighodishgds Runs scored is effected greatly by playing half our games at Petco Park. Last year we scored 4.23 runs per game on the road. the Giants who won the World Series scored 4.32 runs per game on the road. Not a lot of difference. A total of 7 more runs in 81 games. The Padres were only 11 runs behind being #4 in the Leauge in scoring on the road. Clearly it was the home scoring that makes everyone believe the Padres have no bats. Runs on the road last year343 Padres 262 Padres opponents against the Padres
