I voted for the A-Shield/Spear... It's especially effective when used with lettering to say "Aztecs" (as below) The "DS" isn't bad, but doesn't explicitly declare itself either "San Diego" or "Aztecs" (we still occasionally get referred to as South Dakota State by some mediots). The visibility during the NCAA Tournament as our primary "Brand identity" could help that, though, so who knows... of course it explicitly declares itself as San Diego and Aztecs... There's an "S", a "D", and a Spear... South Dakota State is the Jackrabbits. What part of a spear says "Jackrabbit?" How does a block letter "S" say Michigan St. Spartans? It doesn't but when people see that green "S" they know what school it is because of exposure. That will happen with us too. Jack rabbits belong on a spit, roasting over an open fire! ;D

DS I didn't like this logo when it was first unveiled, but it grew on me as an increasing number of our athletic programs started garnering positive national publicity. This logo was what was shown in the (tv and print) media nearly all the time so, as an Aztec, it made me proud to see it. As much as I liked the disgruntled Monty logo, I've accepted the fact that it's never coming back. I cannot continue living with the disgruntled Monty logo if it's a buried issue so I'm moving forward with this "DS" logo. As proof of my support, I even bought a t-shirt with this logo on it. It's great to be an AZTEC!!!

Ofcourse that's the best choice...but as we WILL never go back to that, have to to with the "DS" logo. Confusing it with the SDakota is plain stupid why would a jackrabbit have a spear through their SD Logo? I wish I/we had a photo of that floor when Viejas/Cox opened! Not sure if this is from when it opened. It does have the old logo though.

Glad we changed that court, the logo is okay but the red and yellow inside the 3pt line is terrible, it looks like the McDonalds All American court. I say DS logo, Dago State.

I still miss the old, classic "Disgruntled Monty" and will always prefer gear featuring that logo over any others. I'm also enough of a realist to understand that it will never return in any official capacity. Why not? Who says it will NEVER return? New president, new AD, TGwynn loves Disgruntled. Quitters say never.... I'm not sure though that I'll be involved in spearheading that fight but ya never know.

For those who say the ds logo might make people think it's south Dakota state... How many other schools/pro sports teams could that "a" logo represent?? I always think arizona diamond backs when I see it I have a polo shirt with that "A-spear" logo and was wearing it in Detroit last summer and some guy actually said to me "Go Indians!". I asked what he meant and, pointing to my shirt said, "Isn't that Arkansas State?" I laughed and said, "No, it's for the San Diego State Aztecs." He looked confused and walked on. Needless to say I don't wear that shirt anymore. I'm not a huge fan of the so-called "DS" logo or any of our other current alternates either but at this point it is synonymous with SDSU sports and has been for a while. And since it's recently received so much exposure with the success of football and basketball, for branding purposes it would be a mistake to chance now. Just my opinion.

This is an interesting question b/c it has to do with branding/marketing. I see many related posts on the board that touch on what are essentially branding issues. For example, there was a string yesterday regarding a review of the viejas and qualcomm experiences, and the qualcomm review had many things to say, but much of it basically said the branding/marketing at the Q was sub-par/unclear. There are numerous reasons for that at the Q, but the issue I want to point out for both the Q specifically and SDSU in general is that the branding suffers from both:
1. too complex of logo design (can anyone watching on TV really read the "state" inside the DS logo?); and 2. perhaps more importantly, there are TOO MANY LOGOS!!! I voted for the DS logo, but at this point I don't care which one is chosen (as long as it isn't the chicken head eating the aztec), as long as the university simplifies its branding.
For comparison, take a look at the websites and gear from our close friends at Michigan (or any BCS school, for that matter). Michigan uses the same font on all their gear, and it is either a "M" or "Michigan". That's it. Simplicity is a basic tenet of marketing/branding. Michigan's logo is incredibly boring, but even the wives of casual fans know the "M" when they see it. Then take a look at the discombobulated train wreck that is the gear booth at the next f-ball or b-ball game. No two shirts, fonts, or logos are alike. We even have two shades of red!!!! It is unbelievable.
Someone may know more on this, but I was told by a holiday bowl exec (who made fun of the chicken eating the aztec logo, by the way), that the problem is that there is no single person in charge of branding/marketing at SDSU. Literally the bookstore manager, teamstore manager, f-ball team gear manager etc are all making decisions independently. No wonder it is a mess.
I'm just a season ticket holder, but for anyone more connected to the athletic dept, what do you think about suggesting that a committee be formed to review/simplify the branding?
Also- to be clear, I'm not suggesting that a new logo be created. Rather, that the current list of logos, fonts be trimmed down to one logo, one font style, etc.

DS Still wish we could reverse the overlap/underlap between the S and D... I think reversed it really makes the "S" stand out a lot more.

The DS is definitely the one. And maybe if the colors were reversed the black S would stand out first? Black S, Red D, Black spear?
Its like the green S for Michigan State. By itself .. its dumb, but when it comes with a winning tradition its very recognizable.

Every time I see the "A" logo, I have to remind myself it's not for Arizona or Alabama.
Seriously, it's gotta be the most gutless logo out there! What's next? "I" for Irish? "H" for Huskies? "B" for Bulldogs. "S" for Seminoles...

I think another big problem with the SD logo is that it is too long horizontally because of the spear so when it is displayed on TV or online they have to shrink it to fit within the alotted space. It would probably help to get rid of the spear that way the logo will not look so small and jumbled all the time. This would also make the SD and STATE easier to view and recognize. I attached a very rough design of what it would look like. This design would still be recognizable and cleaner looking. Attachments:

Lose the arrow and round off the corners on the letters and you might have something. By round off, I mean something akin to the attached "sdsu" that the school used on its letterhead during the centennial celebration in 1998 or whenever it was.

Not a bad idea, but I would rather have a block SDSU logo when it comes to tv ( it may also help with espn and other networks calling us sd st, san diego st. etc) and stick with the "DS" logo our main logo

[/quote] I like this logo ^^^^ with the addition of the "AZTECS" script from the red-faced headdress logo somehow incorporated underneath the SD. Maybe in a slightly curved pattern from the bottom left of the D to the bottom right of the D. And I would definitely keep the spear. Without it, the logo does not look menacing enough.
