CF Gwynn 2B Eckstein 1B Gonzalez C Hundley 3B Headley DH Hairston RF Venable LF Cunningham SS Hairston Jr.
That is the Padres best defensive outfield and the first time they have used it.

CF Gwynn 2B Eckstein 1B Gonzalez C Hundley 3B Headley DH Hairston RF Venable LF CunninghamSS Hairston Jr. That is the Padres best defensive outfield and the first time they have used it. Finally! Cunningham made a great catch in a very critical moment. Scott Hairston would never have made that catch. He doesn't like to dive. He is content with waiting for a ball like that to land. Defense is important. I want more of Cunningham in LF. I love the outfield defense of Cunningham, Gwynn, Venable. Notice in the graph below that the Cunningham catch was more important than the Venable 2 run homer, as far as percentage change to win. That doesn't even show what would happen to the graph at that point if the hit fell. If the home run wasn't hit the graph would stay about the same. Note the Venable home run shows a vertical line while the Cunningham catch shows a line not so vertical because the Catch was an out and outs move the x axis.
