Good article. It doesn't mention that McChrystal's strategy itself hasn't been a resounding success. In his own words, "Afghanistan is like a bleeding ulcer".
The general seems to be a great example of the peter principal. In this case he should never have been put into such a public position. It is unfortunate but in the military once you get to that level of command, you must be as much politician and diplomat as general. A good comparison would be Eisenhower vs. Patton.
He can't say what he did and still maintain a viable chain of command. He must be fired from his present position. That said, I hope that he is reassigned to a position more appropriate to his skills and temperament. At his level though, he's probably done and will retire. Hopefully he'll continue his work as a civilian employee in the defense department or one of the intelligence agencies.

exactly on both responses - one must be politician when one is a general particularly overseeing a war and insubordination is an automatic firing.

This whole thing is a "Keystone Kops" episode. I have no idea how history will treat Gen. McChrystal, but it will not be that kindly. I do know how history will treat Obama! I can hear Jimmy Carter cheering now. "At last someone dumber and more incompetent than I was". Thank You America, for electing Obama and letting Jimmy Carter off the hook.

Where are gerald ford and (at least) GW Bush?
GW bush presided for 8 years over the worst economic downturn in half a century Carter absurd stagflation for 4 years Obama 17 months. Ford: nothing important or of substance - one of the most meaningless presidencies Did he WIN?
