If the BCS dosen't make the MWC a auto bid conference San Diego State is the key to possible future inclusion. As we all know Aztecs and UNLV have been millstones around the conferences neck. We still are the largest market in the MWC even though USC & UCLA have a following here I believe that the college TV market in San Diego is still owned by the Aztecs. The population of the county is greater than the whole state of New Mexico and we have a large student population SDSU is no longer a commuter college. So it is imperative that the Aztecs become a top tier MWC program. Even if SDSU had the success rate of AFA the MWC would be seen as a more attractive option to the BCS. Also the MWC needs to get the champion into the Holiday Bowl. I don't know what tie-ins the HB has but maybe because of the Big-12 they have some options available. If the Holiday Bowl has the MWC Champion and the MWC becomes a BCS auto bid it might give the Holiday Bowl a good chance to become a BCS Bowl.
Utah before Urban Myer was just another mid level MWC/WAC team known for there basketball.

Utah before Urban Myer was just another mid level MWC/WAC team known for there basketball. That is a good point. The Holiday Bowl has a pretty low (in the standings) Big 12 team. When they go to 10 teams, the Big 12-2 they may not be able to fill the spots. When they change the mix of schools in the conference it may give all the bowls they are contracted to the ability to change before the contract is done. The MWC champ has got to be better than the (I think) #6 big 12-2 team. Geting the Holiday Bowl would be great for the conference. The PAC10+2 may not be happy playing the MWC in the Las Vegas Bowl, Posinsettia Bowl, and the Holiday Bowl. They can opt out and maybe the Holiday Bowl can pick up the Big10+1. They will need another bowl.

Generally speaking, your concept has merit. Here's the problem, or perhaps I should say sticky detail. If the conference becomes more competitive from top to bottom, the non-conference games become much more important. Either SDSU must schedule real patsies outside the MWC games or they must become so good that they can routinely beat Wisconsin, UCLA, Missouri, Notre Dame, and other powers.
Here's an example of how BCS schools sometimes build winning records. South Carolina finished their regular season with a record of 7-5 last year. Their SEC record was an unimpressive 3-5, but they won all four of their non-conference games, so their over-all record was on the plus side. Those opponents were the following: North Carolina St., Florida Atlantic, South Carolina St., and Clemson. The only impressive win among that quartet was the Clemson game. If San Diego State were to face such a non-conference schedule, it might include the likes of Northern Arizona, North Texas, Indiana, and Cincinnati.
One of the things that killed Tom Craft was the fact that he had to face Ohio State, Colorado, Arizona St., and UCLA. Some of those the Aztecs played more than once. Do you think that maybe if South Carolina had played Wisconsin instead of Florida Atlantic and Oklahoma instead of North Carolina State last year they might have ended up under .500?
If the MWC gets really good all the way down to SDSU and UNLV, those non-conference games will become really important with regards to making it to he BCS. In the case of the Aztecs, that means decisively beating the non-MWC opponents that are mediocre to poor and maybe half the time beating the tough ones (Missouri this year? Cincinnati in 2012?). The only way to have a good year when you win only 3 or 4 in conference is to sweep the cupcakes before the conference season begins. And if one to two of those teams are not cupcakes, then we have to get really good pretty fast.

If SDSU and UNLV are "losers" they drag the conference down due to their poor records. On the other hand if they beat the top teams--TCU/BYU etc.--then the top teams are dropped down. Everyone has to schedule patsies or not make the cut. The reality is making the BCS cut is difficult indeed unless you are already "in" and already scheduling patsies. SDSU and UNLV aren't great contributors to the MWC quest of AQ paydirt, but at least they have basketball teams that contribute, and don't have TV markets so small that you have to read them with a magnifying glass. Thats WYO. and CSU. Saw a post recently on a UNR site asking how Wyoming and CSU ever got into the MWC.

Long standing series' (is that how you pluralize 'series'?) with Utah and BYU is part of it, but also remember that WYO was nationally ranked in the mid 90s (under the coach that went to Purdue) and CSU was one of the better non-big-6 schools for many years and won 2 or 3 of the first few conf. championships.

SDSU and New MExico (who for whatever gets a free pass when in this qualifying period though they have as bad a ranking as SDSU) just plain have to win more non-conf. games - they can't combine for 5 total wins. J

No question we have to win non conference games. I am basically saying that because of San Diego's population, and footprint in California if we were at least as good as Air Force has been over the last 20 years the MWC would be more attractive to the BCS. Every conference has bottom feeder teams but if that bottom feeder is a smaller media center that's not so bad they fill the role of filling out the conference and providing a schedule break during conference play. But when your god-awful bottom feeder team is in your biggest media town that is in PAC-10 territory it makes the whole conference seem second rate no matter how well Wyoming, CSU etc, do. If SDSU becomes a good team in the next few years more people will notice that the MWC is a quality conference. Most conferences have a big 3 or 4 and little rest of the bunch.
My other point is that getting the MWC into the Holiday Bowl would really help our chances into the BCS. When the WAC MWC split happened the Holiday used that excuse to get out of taking the champion of one of those conferences. I'm just thinking that with the Big12-2 the Holiday Bowl would have the opportunity to make a deal to take the MWC Champ.

Someone will have to give Binky a strychnine sandwich if we ever want to see the MWC in the HB again. Ugh, not that guy again!

Oregon at $62mil and WSU at $210 mil. How many years does SDSU have to maintain those research dollars ($145 millions) before they have the same status?
How close is SDSU to becoming a research University & making the snobs in Palo Alto & Bezerkley nervous re: knocking on the pacfudge door??

I would hope that we build our program to compete as Utah has done, and I believe that is what this staff is about, rather than rely on the patsies of the world. 03/04 OOC 3-1 (USU, T A&M, Cal, Oregon) 04/05 OOC 4-0 (USU, T A&M, Az, UNC) 05/06 OOC 2-1 (USU, Az, UNC) 06/07 OOC 2-2 (USU, NAU, BSU, UCLA) 07/08 OOC 3-1 (USU, Ore St., UCLA, Lville) 08/09 OOC 4-0 (USU, Weber, Michigan, Ore St.) 09/10 OOC 3-1 (USU, Oregon, SJSU, Lville) utahutes.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/utah-m-footbl-body.html

Who's Furman and AT&T?? The SEC teams play more "patsies" than any conference. Isn't "patsie" short for "Patricia", by-the-by?

If the Chargers leave San Diego, does the college football scene in San Diego improve or get worse?

No one blamed Craft for losing to Ohio State and Arizona State. He rightly caught flack for his inability to beat New Mexico.
Our trouble over recent years has been losses to Idaho, Cal Poly and San Jose State. Stop losing the games the make us all look bad, and the conference as a whole will be the better off for it. No one will be upset if we go 3-1 non-conf. this year with the loss being at Missouri.

Want do you mean no one will be upset? I will!!! But, we are not there yet so it is too early be concerned about Mizzou. Our first order of business is to take down Nicholls State! As Al Davis says to his Raydars...., JUST WIN BABY! That is what we need to do every time we go out to play. Maybe that should be our motto this season..... JUST WIN BABY!

Nobody - not even UNLV - has been as much of an impediment to the MWC gaining AQ status. Period.
