I am getting tired of the stupid use of TV market. It is not TV market, it is fan base. To act like the TV market for Nebraska is less than UNLV is laughable. Nebraska has a HUGE fan base that lives all over the country/world. UNLV (football) has no fan base. Same with SDSU. If TV market was so big, Florida, Alabama, Notre Dame would have no power becasue their TV markets are so small.

Well, this guy needed a column to write and he jumped at it. If he was so big on market size, why not SD? Your point about fan base is relevant here. LV and Alb. are decent TV markets but are the major population centers of each state. So, you get the city, but not much else. However, TV market sizes are more important now for one reason: cable TV and a conference TV channel. If they get the Big 12 network on in big cities on non-premium tier, that's a lot of money. The writer is probably thinking of the Big 12 as midsouthwestern programs unlike the Big 10 that is pure midwest.
UNM has played the old Southwest Conference schools in the past and under Rocky Long had a series with Texas Tech. Both UNM and and UNLV have historic basketball programs and this guy sees "a fit".
I don't. And I doubt anyone else will either.

It is a natural in so many ways because of the former Southwest Conference history. However, consensus is that TCU has a small fan base (and a small 35,000 seat staduim). However DFW is a good TV market. Overall, the comments are not encouraging that TCU is a candidate for the Big 12.

If and when the Big 12 expands they are going after Arkansas and ND first.

Notre Dame to the Big 12 is a Jerry Jones pipe dream. Other conferences offer more $$$$. Also, ND is pretty full of itself and probably would only affiliate with a conference with very high academic status. Thats not the 10 teams in the Big 12. Only PAC-10, Big-10 and Ivy League meet their standards. Obviously, Ivy League is way under their athletic standards. Just MHO.

Regarding conference expansion, it's all about, in order of importance: (1) TV potential; (2) success of the football program; (3) geographic proximity to other conference schools and high school talent; and (4) how successful men's basketball is. (1) UNM controls its TV market, but that market is only about the 62nd largest in the country: www.rabbitears.info/market.php?request=marketlist(2) The football program has been Tom Craftian/Chuck Longesque whenever the head coach wasn't Dennis Franchione or Rocky Long and right now, neither is there. (Gee, maybe they'll bring Coach Fran back like U$C did with Robofat.) (3) Geographically, UNM would fit the Big 12-2's footprint but there's next to no HS football talent in the state. (4) No problem here, but it just doesn't mean that much. Right now, UNM is approximately equal to SDSU in all four factors so it wouldn't surprise me at all that if the time ever comes, the tiebreaker would be if either football program is still as lousy as it currently is but the other has managed to win a bowl game every third year. (See my signature line.) As to UNLV, I'm not at all convinced that school's fans and administration have any real interest in football. So the way football is becoming of more and more importance in the equation, I think that alone could tip the scales against the Rebels when push comes to shove.

Here's a relevant article by somebody with a brain rather than an agenda: www.themercury.com/k-statesports/article.aspx?articleId=2b6bdd8744534a92b5178f8d8723d56cNote absolutely no mention of UNM as a possible addition. Note also the importance of the TV contract by which the Big 12-2 is hanging by a thread. In that regard, I still think BYU and AFA make the most sense since each has a national TV following. (Sorry Lobos fans and Rebel Robert.)

Is this suppose to be a joke? It isn't supposed to be a joke to UNM and TCU fans on the MWC board. In both cases most seem to think they are likely possibilities for addition to the Big 12-2. So much so that if I was Craig Thompson, I'd be a bit concerned about it. With a couple exceptions, I've been impressed with the BYU guys. More than anybody, it's them the Big 12-2 would probably want yet they seem satisfied to be in the MWC and really not concerned at all about their ultimate fate. Same for AFA fans and Boise fans, who are just elated to be getting out of the WAC. Fans of every other conference school seem pretty concerned about the future, however. With SDSU's location, if we had a football program that had reached even 2/3 of its potential, we would have nothing to worry about just the same as BYU. Until then, are wise to be worried.

One guy writes a dumb article and so many people want to believe it? You could get heavy odds om UNM and UNLV to the B-12, even in Las Vegas. Sports books live in reality. According to Market Track though, UNM is the 44th largest TV market. Not that it would make a difference. www.tvb.org/rcentral/markettrack/us_hh_by_dma.asp
