A couple of thoughts - First his strength (or lack thereof) isn't a big issue. The guy is 16-17 years old and over two years away from even remotely being able to get on the field for us. Kids at that age can gain strength and size rapidly given their high testosterone levels and given the correct training regimen. Second, with "decent" speed for an OL if he doesn't pan out there he might be able to be moved to NT. What I would rather find out is this: Is this guy mean when he is on the field? Does he have an attitude? That is what I want from an OL prospect. They can have all of the measured tangibles, but if they don't have that temper/attitude on the field all of the speed and strength in the world will be wasted. Good points, technique and footwork are also insanely important if he's going to pass block as a tackle.

Have had 2 conversations w/ Sipe, who recruits our area, in regard to potential recruits. In the 1st, it was his opinion that the player in question did not bring the toughness the Aztecs were looking for at that particular position. In the 2nd, they liked a kid because of his toughness despite the fact that his 40 time (4.75) was not adequate for the position they projected him. In the second case I told Sipe I did not believe the kid was fast enough for them and his words to me were "coach, we have plenty of fast kids who can't play football; we need some football players." If they have extended an offer, I am sure they have done their due diligence as to this kid's football makeup.

I think we have some LBers who aren't that fast. As to size didn't Gunther come on board at something like 255? Supposedly he now weighs in the 285-290 range. When everything is said and done we offered this young man a schollie. And I'll readilly agree with you in having confidence in these coaches. They must have seen more they liked than disliked in this kid.

I'm one of those who believes that we need to follow the BSU, TCU models. You bring in a guy with the frame to grow and then put him in a big time weight program. Of course, attitude is huge as well.
If we can land some players that are ready to play D1 FB right out of HS, great. But, at least until the program turns the corner we need to get some raw talent and mold it.

A 4.9 is very fast for a lineman. With that type of speed I'm sure they will keep him at Tackle as long as he is able to keep his speed and quickness as he gains weight. He could play TE if he stays at 255 with that speed. But in some cases, good tackles were once TE's with quick feet, just 60-70 lbs heavier and stronger. Oldie Out
