On the positive side: Coach Fisher gave us a good pep talk, Jim Sterk showed up after fighting his way through traffic from LA, and although he was too late to address the group which by then was on its way out, he stuck around to visit with those who remained. The ever helpful Gina was there from the ticket office and Mandy McKinley is clearly a real "go-getter" who will be a real benefit to the Aztec Club. The plan is for the Aztec Club to meet in this manner the last Thursday of each month at various locations in an effort to build support for Aztec athletics. On the negative side: Only 33 people other than about five staff members showed up, and for the most part they were the same old faces which meant another sermon for the choir and few if any new members of the congregation in the pews. When I say "old faces," I mean that literally as well as figuratively. At age 63 (and not counting staff members present), I'd guess I was in the lower third relative to age of those present, so roughly 11 of us kids (including Bill Hammett and Beau Trickey) joined by 22 long-time AARP members. I'm not complaining about the presence of old timers, of which I am surely one and are the ever diminshing core or Aztec support, but I have very strong concerns about the general absence of younger or even middle-aged fans. Summary: Thank you Dave and Mandy for spearheading this thing, but clearly there is a lot of work to be done. We desperately need the football program to improve significantly in order to restore the kind of campus and community interest that creates fans who will bleed red and black and open their wallets to support a program they feel is worthy of their support. I will bring at least two people younger than myself to the next Aztec Club event I attend. Good event and I echo what you said about Dave and Mandy. Thanks for the effort. I got the feeling that Coach Fisher was a little disappointed in the turn out. I know I was. I brought one newbie. I didn't see many new people there. I will tell you about one newbie that came away very excited. That was the bar tender. He attends some games but was very impressed with Coach Fisher and his words. Great to see young Aztecs like Bill Hammet Jr. and Beau Trickey in attendance. Good job by Coach Fisher, Mandy, Dave, and a couple of Aztec Club board members for roaming the crowd and talking to people. Bottom line. Coach Fisher was great, he is very excited about the upcoming year. On the other hand, these events need to be attended better. Kudos to all that showed.

maybe there could be a organized effort with an email from ticket office or AD , keep in central location MV- include Beth Burns, or other coaches , but it shows you need to market events

I don't live in the area anymore, but one thing that often precluded me from coming to these type of things was the time - 5-7 is difficult to get to during the week as many younger people are having to put in long hours or work non-traditional times that mean split/swing shifts or bad shifts as they are working their way up. As example, I worked pm shift for a year, then 1-9, then 10:30 to 7 - and that was if I didn't have to put in extra hours. I would juggle my schedule or use time off for weekday games, but it is difficult to justify that to go to a meet and greet.
Perhaps scheduling events after games, so McG's after a football game with Fish and Beth there, or after or before a bball game with Brady and Gwynn there. Maybe at Monty's before a bball game.

Not to defend Monty but he and I met up at Drake to see a game in Iowa. He busted his butt to get 200+ miles to a game in December in Iowa before he headed back to SoCal for the holidays (and to see SDSU games). Trust me, he is a true fan (and a great guy) and one who would go to these functions if it fit into his life (and he is a young fan, the kind that are not showing up to these events). So give him a break.

I didn't see what you posted, but feel free to take any shots you want, I'm a big boy and I can handle it. And I get you don't like me, but I offered what I think is part of the problem - and a big part is apathy and the fact that as we've seen nation wide is football drives the athletic bus - and offered what I think are some reasonable solutions. Pure and simple, 5pm is too early to start something in mission valley if you want anybody that is working to attend.

Pure and simple, 5pm is too early to start something in mission valley if you want anybody that is working to attend. Agreed. I would have liked to attend but I get off at 5:00 PM and have to commute from San Ysidro to El Cajon. Also, I'd have been more likely to change my schedule if somebody from the football staff would have been in attendance to speak.

5 PM is too early. Yeah, I get that it's supposed to be happy hour, but I haven't been able to get to a happy hour in 10+years!
Are there plans to switch up locations each month?
